Workshop (PAW)

Focus: to assess the accuracy of CFD in obtaining multi-stream air breathing jet
performance and flow structure.

PAW provides an impartial forum to present findings, discuss results, exchange
ideas and evaluate the effectiveness of existing computer codes and modeling
techniques.

Who we are: Committee members are mostly but not limited to members of the
ABPSI Technical Committee that represent 14 government organizations,
companies and universities.

Accomplishments: The first workshop preceded JPC 2012, which included 20
teams with 50 participants.

PAW provides scholarships to enable students, professors, and retirees to
participate.

Our Future Activities: We have 2 invited session in the 50th AIAA JPC conference
(yes this one) with 11+ papers. The 2nd PAW workshop is tentatively schedule
preceding the 51st AIAA JPC conference in 2014. (cross all fingers!)

How you can help: Provide test cases, ideas, time, and of course, moola.


What is Transformational Flight?
Transformational Flight
• Radically new methods of air transportation (or other
missions)
• Not only new approaches to vehicles, but to the
corresponding missions, infrastructure, technologies,
and regulations
• Initial focus on personal, on-demand aviation
•
•
July 15, 2013
Other topics discussed include sub-orbital long range flight,
hypersonic transport, etc.
A new market opportunity that may not be defined yet
27
Constituent Activities and Gatherings
Air Breathing Propulsion
Systems Integration TC
• 2009: NASA provides $400K in
Centennial Challenge Prizes for the
“Personal Flight Challenge”
• 2010: DARPA Transformer Vertical
Takeoff and Landing Roadable Air
Vehicle $60M program
• 2010: NASA sponsors the “Aviation
Unleashed” conference that attracts
several hundred attendees to discuss
emerging, aviation markets.
• 2011: NASA awards largest aviation
prize of all time ($1.5 million) for the
“Green Flight Challenge” that spurs
the design/development/flight of
unique electric aircraft, and sets the
record for 200 mile range flight and
404 pax mpg.

Air Breathing Propulsion
Systems Integration TC
Program Committee Overview

Emerging Technology Committee formed the Transformational
Flight Working Group in 2008

Ratified as a new Program Committee in May 2013

30 members representing industry, government, and universities
(including international participation)

Activities thus far include 12 transformational flight technical
sessions held at the 2011 and 2012 ATIO conferences as well as
4 planned for Aviation 2013

Additional future activities will include focus on regulatory and
technical obstacles, challenge prizes to stimulate industry growth,
and societal acceptance


Opportunities for Collaboration
How can the Air Breathing Propulsion
Systems Integration TC and the
Transformational Flight PC work together
for the mutual benefit of both committees?
•
Joint technical sessions applicable to both
committees’ interests
• Inter-committee discussion on opportunities for
(or challenges to) air breathing propulsions
systems integration into a new type of air
vehicles such as personal, “flying car” type
concepts
• Other ideas?
•
July 15, 2013
The TF PC welcomes ideas the ABPSI TC may have for
cooperation!
