stipend) in research proposals before I will sign transmittals.
The To-Do List, 2014-15
 Insuring the success and retention of CSA faculty,
especially those hired over the past 6 years;
(16 PT&R cases last year; 2nd year of salary increases;
core facilities support; increased REF funding, etc.)
 Expansion of graduate programs, continued focus on
course-work & accelerated (4+1) MS programs where
appropriate; also increase Ph.D. enrollment;
 Diversity: Encourage in all recruiting efforts; Spousal
Opportunities; Training required for ALL members of
Search committees and PT&R committees;
 Unit-level Activities: Statistics; Computer Alliance; GIS;
Chemistry space –safety and upgrading; human health;
 Assessment Activities: Information Literacy

 Strategic Plan update – university and
college level
 CSA Searches (limited start-up) 13 TT + 5)








SFHI replacement in CLS/KIP;
2 ass’ts in Bio; P chem in CH;
2 ass’ts, 1 lecturer in CLS; 1 ass’t + in CS;
Professor of Practice in KIP;
3 ass’ts; 3 lecturers in HU;
Senior faculty in statistics;
2 ass’ts, 1 lecturer, senior faculty in SS;
Band director in VPA.
CSA Department Accomplishments!
• Biological Sciences: hosted 25th annual high school Bioathlon
in May; Guilang Tang received $2.5 million from NSF on micro
RNA regulation;
• Army ROTC: Significant number of cadets attended summer
training programs across the country, earning distinguished
results.
• Air Force ROTC: Team Excellence Award, #1 of 145
detachments nationwide.
• Computer Science: Linda Ott received initial MTU Diversity
Award; Charles Wallace recipient of Univ. Distinguished
Service Award; student team was 64th in the 2014
International Collegiate Programming Competition in
Ekaterinburg, Russia.
CSA Department Accomplishments!
• CLS: Brad Baltensperger, Amy Lark, Jackie Huntoon – $5
million MI Star project from Dow Foundation.
• Chemistry: Shiyue Fang and PhD candidate Durga Pokharel,
recipients of 2014 Bhakta Rath Award; Tarun Dam was
inducted into Academy of Teaching Excellence.
• Humanities: Suzanne Jurva (STC ‘82) and Erin
Smith recognized by Finlandia Foundation
National for documentary film “Yoopera!”,
a chronicle of the making of “Rockland:
The Opera.”
• VPA: Every faculty member serves on leading
national and professional organizations.
CSA Department Accomplishments!
• Social Sciences: Kathleen Halvorsen recipient of University
Research Award for 2014.
• Physics: Robert Nemiroff received 2013 Advanced Imaging
Conference Hubble Award for Astronomy Picture of the Day.
• Math: New programs: statistics; concentration in business
analytics’ minor in statistics
• Kinesiology & Integrative Physiology: DPT facility at ATDC
dedicated and joint program with Central Michigan launched.
• Real Progress with NIH: 2014 awards to Jason Carter (KIP),
Shiyue Fang (CH) and Philart Jeon (CLS) totaling $859,000;
CoE awards bring total active NIH grants to $2.1 million. This
is superb work in a very difficult funding climate!
