The National Junior College
Athletic Association – NJCAA
 The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA)
regulates intercollegiate athletics of community colleges.
 It is the community college counterpart of the National College
Athletic Association (NCAA), which oversees athletics at fouryear institutions.
 The organization's goal is to promote athletics as a valuable
component of the educational experience at community
colleges.
 The NJCAA has 525 member colleges participating in 15 men's
and 14 women's sports.
 There are 50 national championships and nine football bowl
games.

 Consists of two-year programs representing three
separate divisions (I, II and III).
 D-I schools may offer full grant in aids which include
tuition, fees, room, board, books and course related
material.
 D-II are limited to awarding tuition, fees and books.
 Division III institutions may provide no athletically
related financial assistance.

 However, NJCAA colleges that do not offer athletic aid
may choose to participate at the Division I or II level if
they so desire.
 Some JC’s offer you the “typical college experience” of
living in a dorm, cheering at football games, that you
would have at a 4 year school.
 What a junior college can offer is an economical way to
attend college for two years then transfer to a 4 year
school.
 The NJCAA does have a letter of intent program to
commit athletes to scholarships but even if an athlete
has signed with a junior college he/she can still accept
a scholarship and attend a four year school.

The general requirements for prospective NJCAA studentathletes are the following:
 Students must be a high school graduate, have received
a high school equivalency diploma, or have been
certified as having passed a national test such as the
General Education Development Test (GED).
 Non-high school graduates can establish eligibility by
completing one term of college work and passing 12
credits with a 1.75 GPA or higher.
 Students are allowed two seasons of competition in any
sport at a NJCAA college, and must be full-time students
while they’re playing those sports.

What is a Walk-On?
A walk-on athlete is one that makes the team but does not
receive any athletic scholarship; walk-ons are still eligible to
receive academic aid though.
Athletes can choose to walk on to a program for a variety of
reasons.
 In some cases, coaches already have all of their scholarship
money allocated for a student’s graduation year.
 Other times, athletes may try to play slightly above their
competition level, or they have started the recruiting process
too late.

Considering Walking On
 If you are considering walking on, spend some time researching
the program and your prospects of making a particular team.
 Look at the athletes that are set to graduate and what athletes
a program has signed in your class.
 Contact the coach to get more information about a program
and to see what your prospects are of making the team.
 Just because you walk on to a program does not necessarily
mean you just show up for tryouts one day. Walk-ons regularly
communicate with coaches before applying to a college.

Typical Walk-On Process
If you are interested in becoming a member of an athletic team
you must contact the coaching staff to determine if spaces are
available and the date when a try-out will be conducted.
You will need to be:
 Admitted and attending the college full-time
 Have a current physical examination
 Proof of health insurance
Since the NJCAA has fewer recruiting guidelines and restrictions,
the walk-on process will be less stringent.

*SelectCollegeAthlete.com sponsored a survey of 109 current college coaches from
around the country to help athletes better understand the recruiting process and how
to improve their chances of getting recruited and receiving scholarship offers.
Participating coaches were from NCAA Division I, II, III, and the NAIA representing 13
different men’s and women’s sports. Results above are directly from this survey.

Research the Program
Visit the website of the programs you are interested in. These sites
can provide insight and valuable information about the school, team
and staff. Many include the following:









A schedule of games
Rosters
Statistics
Player profiles
Coaching staff bio's
Photos of the field and facilities
Dates of upcoming camps, clinics, and tournaments
Staff phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and points of contact
Fan information regarding tickets, directions, parking, special
events and promotions

Research the Program
Now that you have familiarized yourself with a particular
program it’s time to take the next step to see if this is the
right program for you.
 Contact the coach and see if there will be any roster
openings at your position.
 Talk to former players to see how they enjoyed their
time there as a student-athlete.
 Talk to current players. Ask them what a typical day is
like? How are practices run? What is the coaching style
of the head coach, assistants and overall staff?
