What is Unicode?

Unicode provides a unique number for every character
no matter what the platform
no matter what the program
no matter what the language
The Unicode Standard [Unicode] defines the universal
character set.
Its primary goal is to provide an unambiguous encoding of
the content of plain text, ultimately covering all languages in
the world, but also major text-based notational systems for
science, technology, music, and scholarship.
Unicode Support
Apple, HP, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP,…
Unicode is required by modern standards:
XML, Java, ECMAScript (JavaScript), LDAP, CORBA 3.0,
WML, etc.
