• Objective: SWBAT analyze the 4 conflicts of the Civil war.

4 conflicts of Civil War: 1) Separation over governments 2) Separation of groups of people 3) Separation over laws 4) Separation over slavery

States Rights

Social-North states vs. South states

VS.

Political-small states wanted popular sovereignty and independence; feared balance of power in government Economic-South had slave labor; people forced to work to earn a living Culture-Many Southerners way of life mainly consisted of farming and working plantations

Federal Rights

Social- North states vs. South states Political- a central government for all; feared balance of power in government Economic-North had free labor; people choosing to work to earn a living Culture-Many Northerners way of life mainly consisted of agriculture and industry.

*Believed slave labor was necessary to earn a living *Economic based on cotton (invention of cotton gin helped; grew and picked the cotton) *Socially known for plantation lifestyle (slow and relaxed) *Believed free labor was necessary to earn a living *Economy based on agriculture and industry (used cotton to make things) *Socially known for city lifestyle (busy and big)

*Social-Slave states vs. Free states (anti-slavery) Slave States (South): Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Arkansas. Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, Delaware Free States (North): Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin *Political-Missouri wanted to enter the Union, Northern government officials not happy because it would be a slave state. Government made compromise by allowing Maine a free slave state enter the Union.

*Economic-Slave labor was cheap *Culture-Northern states believed in free labor (choice of work to earn a living) vs. Southern states believed slave labor (forced to work to earn a living)

*Social-South (pro-slavery) vs. North (anti-slavery) *Political-After Mexican-American war, new states admitted into the Union led to many controversial acts; Wilmot Provisio (wanted to stop slavery), Compromise of 1850 (California be free, Utah & New Mexico get to choose), Fugitive slave act (capturing of slaves), Kansas-Nebraska act (through popular sovereignty states allowed to choose slavery; Bleeding Kansas).

*Economic-Slave labor; cheap for the South *Culture-Many slaves tried to escape to the North to be free.
