Digital Citizenship
Why Is It Taught?
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires that school district
comply with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requirements.
When Is It Taught? At the beginning of the school year.
How Is It Taught? The Digital Learning Department has created training videos
that all students are required to view. In order to ensure grade level
appropriateness separate videos were created for Grades K-1, 2-5, and 6-12.
Finding the Videos- Videos can be found on VBrick (go to TuneIn2 and conduct
a search for “Digital Citizenship”).
Can The Videos Be Shown in an Assembly Setting? Yes! Simply document that
each student was present at the assembly to ensure that all students view the
video for their grade level.
ALL of The Students on my campus have viewed the
videos, now what?
 Please complete the “Digital Citizenship Verification Form” and submit as
an email attachment (after signing and scanning), via interoffice mail, or fax
((281) 634-1065) to: Mary Connealy.
 What is expected of Students and Parents? The Digital Citizenship
documentation and consent form is provided to students and parents as
part of the FBISD Student/Parent Handbook. Parents and students must
make a selection via the Parent Consent Checklist. The consent form
selection is mandatory for Digital Citizenship during new student
registration and upon entering grades six and nine. The consent selection
remains in place during subsequent years unless the parent elects to
resubmit.

So...What Does
This Mean???
• The FCC released its long-awaited Order (FCC 11-125) to
implement the CIPA (Children's Internet Protection Act)
Amendments (passed by Congress in 2008).
• The new law, entitled "Protecting Children in the 21st Century
Act," contains provisions that school districts must uphold.
• The FCC Order (FCC 11-125) implemented the “educating”
requirements of the Protecting Children Act effective July
2012.
• Schools are now required to teach online safety to students.

The Internet Safety Curriculum can be found in
PCG. Please see your Digital Learning Specialist
and/or your campus’ Librarian for more
information.
Documenting Internet Safety Instruction Each Nine Weeks:
At the end of each grading period, please sign the “Internet Safety Verification
Form” (Confirming that Internet Safety has been taught to all students on your
campus this grading period) and return via inter-district mail or by scanning and
submitting as an electronic mail attachment to:

If you are sending your form via electronic mail, please use the following subject
line:
“YOUR CAMPUS’ NAME: Internet Safety Verification Form ___ Nine Weeks’”
