Education Service Agency Program: Supervising and Supporting Effective Teaching in Every Classroom

Presented by: Dr. Robert Marzano, CEO, Marzano Research Laboratory Michael Toth, CEO, Learning Sciences International, provider of iObservation

Program Overview

• • • • Dr. Robert Marzano’s Art and Science of Teaching Observation and Feedback Protocol powered by iObservation Dr. Marzano’s Leaders of Learning Program Aligned teacher professional development Additional services for participating ESAs

Marzano Art & Science of Teaching Observation and Feedback Protocol

• • • Identifies 41 research-based strategies for effective teaching Establishes common language/model of instruction • • Provides data to support and monitor implementation of strategies in the classroom Connects teacher growth to student achievement Flexible to allow districts to adapt and adopt the model to reflect local needs and priorities yet retain the Common Language

Why is a Common Language/Model of Instruction Critical?

• • • Region-wide definition of Effective Teaching so every leader and every teacher knows what effective teaching

looks and sounds like

• Inter-rater reliability for supervisors, teacher leaders, coaches, and teachers Ability to provide professional development aligned to the Common Language/Model of Instruction and measure progress in improving teacher practice Consistency for data collection to measure progress across classrooms, schools and districts

A System of Feedback Self Observation

Teachers analyze their own teaching through videotapes

Self Reflection Instructional Rounds Observations

Teachers reflect upon their practiceTeacher and administrator teams engage

collectively in examining a model or language of instruction

Observation of an entire lesson

Walkthroughs

Identify trends and patterns

across classrooms, grade levels, schools and district Common and Comprehensive Model of Instruction

Does use of research-based strategies always improve student learning?

When used inappropriately, they can actually depress student learning.

Typical bell curve of student results from teachers using a research-based strategy Decreased Student Achievement ES=0 Increased Student Achievement

Dr. Robert Marzano’s Art and Science of Teaching Observation and Feedback Protocol on iObservation is the only system that identifies research-based strategies: • In the part (segment) or type of lesson that is appropriate for the strategy • At the appropriate level of implementation

ESA Program

• • • • • • Support member districts in building common language/model of instruction Become a Data Hub in order to better support your districts Bring an instructional improvement system to members that aligns with Race to the Top initiative Receive support and consultation services from LSI No cost to ESA for services provided Generate additional revenues and additional programs

Districts Participate in:

• Dr. Marzano’s Art and Science of Teaching Observation and Feedback

Protocol

powered by iObservation • Dr. Marzano’s

Leaders of Learning

Program for instructional leaders and teacher leaders • Aligned

teacher professional development

Dr. Marzano’s Leaders of Learning Program

• • • • • • • Six sessions spanning one or more years Marzano Art & Science of Teaching Observation and Feedback Protocol Inter-rater reliability for observers Constructing effective feedback Analyzing data on teachers’ practice for trends and patterns Using data to inform collegial conversations and inform PLCs Connecting teacher practice to student achievement

Leaders of Learning Program: LSI Support Services & Data Inquiry Cycle

• • • • • Check-in between every session Understanding iObservation data to identify

trends and patterns

Recommendations for follow-up and support Review of progress to goal against plan Using individual district data to prepare for the next session

Leaders of Learning Options:

• Districts that have 25 or more instructional leaders may have LSI-provided district-based sessions • Smaller districts or districts phasing in the system may send instructional leaders to ESA for cross-district cohorts. LSI will provide the same levels of services to each district.

• Sustainability as districts experience turnover they may send new principals to ESA to participate in cross-district cohorts.

• Instructional leaders wanting to participate in the Program but not yet implementing may participate through the ESA

Leaders of Learning Tuition Including Services:

• For instructional leaders implementing iObservation with Dr. Marzano’s Protocol for six sessions, materials, and support services: $2,800 • For instructional leaders not yet implementing including six sessions, materials, temporary iObservation license and support services: $3,000 • Revenue share to ESA for each cross-district cohort: o $4800 for 6 sessions with cohort of 20 participants (minimum) o $6000 for 6 sessions with cohort of 30 participants o $7800 for 6 sessions with cohort of 35 participants (maximum)

Teacher Professional Development:

• Deep content designed by Dr. Robert Marzano with a graduate credit option • Districts may have LSI-provided district-based sessions or send teachers to cross-district sessions at the ESA • Smaller districts or districts phasing in the system may send teachers to the ESA for cross-district cohorts. • Sustainability as districts experience turnover they may send new teachers to ESA to participate in cross-district cohorts.

• Teachers wanting to participate in the sessions but not yet implementing may participate through the ESA

Teacher Professional Development:

• Offered by LSI faculty or by certified staff developers • $4,500 per session plus materials • Graduate credit is optional • ESA may offer sessions at a per seat fee and use the difference to support its programs and services

ESA as Data Hub

(no charge) • • • • • iObservation licenses for ESA to access data Receive consultation prior to every session to understand iObservation data of member districts Identify trends and patterns across districts Discover improvement needs of member districts Tailor services and supports to member districts

Next Steps

• Schedule webinar or in-person presentation for district superintendents to gauge interest • Schedule planning session with key leaders from interested districts • Execute LSI-ESA agreement
