Why do Smarter Cities matter?
There are a lot of us
already, and more every
day:
•
The UK is the most densely
populated major country in
Europe.
•
In 2010, the UK population
grew by 409,000 – one third of
the total population growth in
the EU.
•
The world cannot support
continuing GDP growth at the
current level of usage of
natural resources
Most of us live in urban
areas:
•
More than 50% of the
world’s population, and
more than 90% of the
UK’s, now live in urban
areas.
•
Cities are importers of
resources including food,
energy water, labour and
skills.
•
City supply chains are
congested and vulnerable
to disruption.
We are not prepared for the competitive global society of the future:
•
Whilst future economic growth is expected to be highly dependent on technology, less than 20% of
people hired to do IT jobs in the UK acquire their IT skills in the education system.
•
Despite the evolution of internet and pervasive technologies, many people do not have access to
technology, education and opportunity.
