Emirates National Schools Curriculum Standards
Introduction: Standards guide and focus classroom
instruction and form a tight vertical and horizontal
spiral that guides content coverage. Standards also
include processes. These processes such as thinking
like an engineer, writer, or a scientist allow students to
experience real life skills while learning the content
outlined by the standards.
The Purpose: Standards, if followed with fidelity,
assure that students have all of the foundational skills,
a body of knowledge and deep content understanding
for each subject. The coverage of standards enables
students to have the depth of knowledge necessary to
achieve in higher level courses such as Advanced
Placement, IB MYP and Diploma Programs.
The Standards:
The standards implemented by
Emirates National Schools are the National Curriculum
Standards and the American Common Core Standards.
The National Curriculum Standards are provided by the
UAE Ministry of Education and Abu Dhabi Educational
Council. These standards are used for the subjects of
Arabic, Islamic Studies, and UAE National Studies. The
American Common Core Standards are used for the
areas of Science, Mathematics, Technology, English,
Arts, Physical Education, Health and Social Studies.
Why does ENS use the American Common Core
standards? The American Common Core standards
were developed as a result of an extensive study that
determined that graduating students did not have the
skills to be successful in work and school. This began a
move toward the development of cohesive and high
quality content and process standards that would
assure a comprehensive foundation of knowledge,
skills and concepts that would serve students with
their future goals and needs.
How do the American Common Core standards apply
to ENS students? In order to ensure fluency in the
American Curricular areas the use of American
Common Core standards are used to assure that our
students graduate with the ability to think deeply,
problem-solve, create original works,
and feel
competent with academic content. It is these skills that

‫معايير مناهج مدارس اإلمارات الوطنية‬
Emirates National Schools Curriculum Standards
are necessary to be confident and to be an
academically literate student. The ability to solve
complex problems, and make informed decisions
across all aspects of life such as health, spiritual,
financial, political, and business. Students must be
well-prepared and armed with the tools to approach
these challenges. Our students are the future leaders
of the UAE and we are obligated to implement the
most effective tools to assure their readiness for
such a challenge. Standards and IB form the
framework for this readiness.
How are the standards used within the
International Baccalaureate (IB) PYP, MYP and DP
Programs? The IB programs provide the framework
for delivery of the standards and they assure that
student character and international mindedness are
prioritized. In PYP and MYP, IB forms the framework
for delivery of standards and standards form the
content backbone. At the DP level, the standards are
aligned with the DP curriculum. Standards widen and
deepen the content covered over the years and they
help to guide instruction for teachers .
How are the standards used by the teacher for
instruction? The teacher will use a standard or
standards for their subject(s) on a daily basis. The
standard translates to the purpose [focus, objective]
of the lesson. This helps the teacher and students to
focus on what’s important in the day’s lesson.
Having a focus on the lesson maximizes the chance
that students understand, can manipulate and know
and are able to do the work.
