THE FOUNDATION STAGE

WELCOME TO RECEPTION
• Please feel free to have a look around our
classrooms following the meeting. We will also
be around if anyone has any questions.

 Water bottles – Water only.
 Come to school and pick up on time.

 PE (Will start after half term)
Children will take part in PE sessions once per week. Please
make sure children have the correct PE kit in school each week.
We will send PE kits home for a freshen up once per term.
THE NEW FS CURRICULUM
There are seven areas of learning and development that must shape educational
programmes in early years settings. All areas of learning and development are
important and inter-connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting
children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to
learn, form relationships and thrive.
The three
prime
areas are:
 Communication and language
 Physical development
 Personal, social and emotional development
Four specific areas through which the three prime areas are strengthened and
applied.

ASSESSMENT
The Foundation Stage Profile
 During the first 6 weeks, the teachers will be completing a
baseline assessment on each child.

Use observations (Learning Stories)

The FS profile is continually filled in to enable teachers to
monitor and celebrate individual progress and to identify
next steps for development.

Pieces of work are collated into a child’s Record of
Achievement.

Evidence of writing examples, maths work, ICT work,
photographs, learning experiences, homework, etc. are
all used for assessment.
ENGLISH AND MATHS
• In Reception we will teach Phonics, English and Maths everyday. The
children will work through a range of objectives and activities taken from the
Foundation curriculum.
• The children will also take part in a 15 minute dough disco. This is a fun
activity to start each day and is vital for physical development, especially for
their fine motor skills.

READING
When will my child get a reading book?
For the first few weeks in Reception, the teachers will be completing a baseline assessment. This
assessment will show us exactly where your child is on the Foundation profile. We will give your
child a book which is in line with their phonic knowledge. If your book has words then please
don’t expect your child to read them straight away. Many of the books have repetitive text and
children use the picture cues to help them with the words.
When will the book be changed?
• The books will be changed once per week. The day will vary (5 children per day)
• Reading books must be brought into school every day.
• Guided reading happens everyday, each child will read with an adult twice per week.
• Their reading record book should be signed by an adult to say they have read and feedback
any difficulties or concerns. We encourage children to read other books of their own at home
• The wider the variety of reading material they experience, the better.

Please remember that some children find it hard to
communicate with each other and often use their hands to
express themselves.
THE NEST AT
NEWTON
Nurture Group
A nurture group is a small class of six to eight children which acts as a kind of bridge between
home and school. It offers additional help for pupils within a small, structured ‘home like’
classroom. We incorporate curriculum activities although the majority of the learning is social,
emotional, behavioural aspects of learning.
HOMEWORK
We will be sending homework home each
week.
This will consist of:

FINALLY
We appreciate all the help you can give. I hope we can
work together to make Reception a successful and
enjoyable experience for your child.
Teachers will be around on their classroom door each
morning for any short messages that you want to pass on. If
you wish to make an appointment after school to speak to
your child’s class teacher please arrange this with your class
teacher or via the office, we are always happy to discuss any
of your concerns or queries that you may have.
