stereotyped?
Can you think of 3
other stereotypes?
What is it?
It’s assuming that
everyone in a
particular group is the
same.
Why do stereotypes exist?
–There is sometimes a grain of truth in them.
– It’s deliberate propaganda against that group.
–It’s easier to think of people in groups rather than
as individuals
–Ignorance
Make a list of words in the back of your
books of how Muslims are stereotyped.
Did you get any of the following?
Terrorist
Al qaeda
Paki
Taliban
Extremist
Not English
Suicide Bombers
Beards
Burqa
Head scarf
Tea Towel
Bin Laden
Stereotyping Muslims leads directly to
Islamophobia…
This means….?
Islamophobia is literally translated
as the fear of Islam:
it is used to refer to prejudice or discrimination
against Muslims and incorporates the perception
that Islam has no values in common with other
cultures, is inferior to the West and is a violent
political ideology rather than a religion. The term
itself dates back to the 1980s, but came into
common usage after the September 11th attacks
in America in 2001.

ISLAMOPHOBIA

How is she

Police are searching for a gang of about 20 Derby men after an
attack on a Muslim couple on a train to Nottingham. Abida Malik
said the men called her and her husband Asif Ahmed terrorists.
One man put Mr Ahmed in a headlock saying he was making a
citizen’s arrest.
The gang boarded the train at Loughborough on Easter Sunday
evening, after what British Transport Police believe was a
drinking session. Officers have described it as an “unpleasant
and nasty” incident.
Abida Malik, who wears the hijab – or headscarf – was
travelling home after a wedding in Leicester with her husband.
She said: “I was full of fear, my heart was beating really
fast and I felt so helpless because there was so many of
them.”
“Everyone seemed too scared to do anything… Now I don’t
want to travel on the train by myself, and I don’t want him
(Asif) to go by himself. They could have stabbed him”.
BBC News, 8 April 2010
In WW2 the Jews were stereotyped as money grabbers,
communists, greedy and the reason that Germany was in such
a mess – and we know what happened as a result.
What has this got to do with today?
Stereotyping is still causing a lot of problems in modern day
society…
Like what?
Predominantly RACISM – groups such as the EDL base their
ideas and beliefs on stereotypes of Muslims as terrorists.

Daily Express 24 October 2005.
This story was completely
fabricated and was flatly denied by
the banks mentioned in the article,
one of which was Nat West which
still uses piggy banks in many of its
articles.
MUSLIM SICKOS’ MADDIE
KIDNAP SHOCK.
Daily Star 28 April 2008
This does not refer to Muslims
having any part in the disappearance
of Madeline McCann, instead it
refers to a website on which claims
were made that Madeline’s parents
were involved in her disappearance,
a claim that had already been made
in several mainstream newspapers.
GET OFF MY BUS I NEED TO PRAY.
The Sun 28 March2008
The Sun claimed that the driver had ordered
people off his bus so that he could pray.
In actuality the bus driver had been ordered to stop his bus and tell the
passengers to board the bus behind in order to maintain frequency as the
bus was delayed, he was told not to allow any passengers to board his bus
and was on a 10 minute break so he was allowed to do as he wished.
