Massive Investment Opportunities
•
A buzz of excitement in the air
•
Kenya is on the verge of rolling out a USD 23 billion dollar project to exploit
the vast resources in Coast and Northern Kenya that will catapult the
country into a medium income economy by 2030
•
The initiative has major strategic, socio-economic, infrastructure, and
regional trade implications
•
It comprises seven components (Lamu port, highway, railway, oil pipelines,
refinery, resort cities and airports)
Arabian Hotel Investment Conference, 5th – 6th May 2013 – Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai
The $23 Billion Lamu Port Project
•
Arguably the country’s largest investment so far
•
Expected to be the largest modern free port on the Eastern Coast of Africa
•
The port, will be able to handle Super Post Panamax vessels, with a capacity of 8,000
teu as opposed to the 3,000 teu other vessels it is currently handling
•
To serve as a convenient axis that links China/India with the rich interland countries
of Africa
•
Involves a new transport corridor that will open up a route to the landlocked
countries of Ethiopia and the newly independent, South Sudan
•
In addition to raising the scope for this region’s tourism, agriculture and industrial
potential, the project will open up access to Oil rich Southern Sudan

trains, which can travel at 160km per hour.
– The Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor (or LAPSSET) is the
region's, most ambitious infrastructure project
– EAC Protocol enacted in 2011 for the free movement of resources across EA
including Rwanda and Burundi
– A prosperous East Africa at peace with itself –solution to Al-Shabaab
– Kenya Airways has the largest network in Africa, making the country the
gateway to the rest of the world
– China will be the largest economy in the world by 2050
