The climate of Australia
Equatorial
Only the south-east and
south-west corners
have a temperate
climate and moderately
fertile soil. The northern
part of the country has
a tropical climate: part
is tropical rain forests,
part’s grasslands, and
part’s desert.

Tornado
Rainfall is highly variable, with
frequent droughts lasting
several seasons. Occasionally a
dust storm will blanket a region
or even several states and there
are reports of the occasional
large cyclones or tornado.

Forests
In fact Eucalyptus are well adapted
for periodic fires. The most species
are dependent on them for spread
and regeneration. Eucalyptus have
many uses which have made them
economically important trees.
At least 700 different sorts of plants
and seventy sorts of birds, animals
and frogs occur only in the Wet
Tropics.

Deserts
These north- south oriented
dunes are static, held in
position by vegetation. They
vary in height from 3 metres
in the west to around 30
metres on the east.
Simpson Desert
Gibson perished while
attempting to cross it in
1874. Wildlife includes
red kangaroo, emu,
camels and others desert
animals.

The Olgas
The Olgas of
Australia thrust
up from the
desert plain,
creating a
cluster of 36 tall,

tightly separated
by deep gorges
and narrow

The Great Barrier Reif
These reefs, lying just above
or below the water, look like
piles of stones. There are
many beautiful coral reefs in
the world, but the one off the
coast of Australia is the

Droughts
...Now the wind grew strong and hard,
it worked at the rain crust
in the corn fields.
Little by little the sky
was darkened by the mixing dust,
and the wind felt over the earth,
loosened the dust and carried it away.
...from The Grapes of Wrath,
written by John Steinbeck.

The outback
(The outback does not
officially exist, it is only a
term used to refer to
locations that are far away
from big cities. The fertile
parts are known as
Rangelands and have
been traditionally used for
