Australia’s
best-known
animals are the kangaroo,
the koala and the dingo.
There are 55 species of
parrots in Australia. They
are very colourful. The emu
is the most interesting bird in
Australia. It is big and
cannot fly. The kookaburra
is
another
interesting
Australian bird. It cannot
sing, but laughs like a

Kangaroo is the symbol of Australia.
The
kangaroo
is
perhaps the best known of
Australia’s animals. There
are more than 40 different
kinds of kangaroos in
Australia, in many different
sizes and colours. The big red
kangaroo and the grey
kangaroo may be as tall as a
grown – up man. Some
kangaroos are about the size
of a large dog. The smallest
kangaroo is the rat kangaroo.
They can often be seen in
many of the forests and
parks.

Kangaroos are the largest living
marsupials in the world and are
usually red or grey. The Australian
Coat of Arms has a Kangaroo and
Emu holding a shield with symbols
representing the six states on it.
Kangaroos have greatly enlarged hind
legs, a strong, muscular tail, small
forelegs, a relatively small head, and
large ears. They usually move around
with a hopping gait. The long, strong
tail is used as a balance when hopping
and as a prop when resting or fighting.

Koala is one of the bestknown and most loved animals in
Australia. Koalas live in wooded
areas containing suitable food.
They are very fussy eaters, feeding
almost entirely on eucalyptus

incorrectly called a “Koala Bear”.
It is not related to the bear family
at all as it is a marsupial mammal,
not a placental. The koala sleeps
in a fork of a tree for most of the
day and moves about and feeds at
night.
