* Gabby Douglas: Key to
Determination

Gabby Douglas is an inspirational
gymnast athlete. My question to ask
is In the toughest times of Gabby’s
journey, what helped her get to the
Olympics. This is her key to
determination I think.

Gabriel Christina Victoria
Douglas was born on December
31, 1995 in Virginia Beach. Her
parents are Timothy and Natalie
Douglas. She has two sisters
and one brother. Arielle, Joyelle,
and Johnathon Douglas. After
about a year or so after Gabby
was born, some of her moms
family relatives took them in
after they had lived in a van for
the first part of Gabby’s life. Her
father abandoned them after
that.

When she was 14 she
moved to Iowa to start
training with Liang Chow.
She moved in with people
she didn’t know that took
her in as one of they’re
own, they also had 4 other
younger daughters than
Gabby.

Gabby started doing gymnastics at home with her
older sister Arielle teaching her new things every day.
She soon got into a class though at Excalibur Gym, but
she says that she was bullied by her fellow coach and
teammates due to the fact that she was one of the few
African Americans doing gymnastics at that time. In
some way Gabby’s dreams of going to the Olympics
never went away.

Gabby said, “ Yes, I’ve had a bunch of tough
times in my life and my doing of gymnastics, but
I’ve never let that distract or hurt what I do in
the Gym. She also said that she puts her heart
and soul into gymnastics and pushed herself to
the limit of her abilities, no matter what else was
going on around her. Her determination inspires
me every day.

Her family support and self encouragement got her
to the 2012 Olympics which also got her two gold
medals, one with her team and one solo gold metal.
