BEFORE SCHOOL AFTER SCHOOL ADVISORY DISTINGUISHED GRADUATION Complete the 3rd year of the same foreign language Earn 4 Advanced Measures: Score a 3 or higher on an AP exam (1 measure possible per AP class) Earn an A or B in a Dual Credit course (1 measure possible per semester) 7 STAAR End of Course Tests In order to receive a Texas High School Diploma, students must pass 5 STAAR EOC assessments Algebra 1 English 1 English 2 Biology US History AP Test ● May 4-15, 2015 ● Cost o o $35 per test Free/Reduced: $10 per test ● Pay or payment plan by October 31 How to Sign Up for the AP Test ● Pick up an AP Test Registration Form from your AP teacher or Mrs. Ray’s office starting Monday, September 8 How to Sign Up for the AP Test ● Return registration form and payment to Ms. Herrod in the book room by Friday, October 31 PAP/AP Deadlines ● You may drop a PAP/AP course until Friday, September 19 PAP/AP Deadlines ● Pick up a schedule change form in the counselor’s office ● Once it is filled out, return it to your counselor by September 19th ● Schedule changes are subject to availability AP Deadlines ● AFTER September 19th, to drop a PAP/AP course, you must: o Pick up a PAP/AP Exit form from your teacher o Attend three documented tutorial sessions o Attend a documented parent/student/teacher conference AP Deadlines Once these steps are completed, you may: ● Submit the completed exit form to your counselor. ● Complete the Schedule Change form ● After the Schedule Change form is completed and returned to your counselor, the appropriate schedule change shall be made. What you need to know. . . ● Your grade from your AP class follows you into your new class (60 in an AP/PAP class = 60 in a nonAP/PAP class) ● Schedule changes are subject to availability and a comparable course. Courses such as AP Biology and AP Statistics cannot be dropped after September 19; they can only be dropped at semester. See your counselor for more information What you need to know. . . ● Once you complete the PAP/AP Exit Request form and the Schedule Change form, your class schedule may not change until the next grading period or shortly thereafter. ● Students beginning the second semester of a twosemester course are expected to remain in the course throughout the semester. Family Connections assists students in their college and career planning. • • • • • • • • class emails college search career profile test personality profile test scholarship list community service transcript request GPA/class rank www.succeed.naviance.com/magnoliawest Step 1: Creating a Plan • Utilize personality and career profilers on Family Connections – Workforce – Technical or Trade School – Military Service, ROTC Programs – Junior/Community Colleges – Colleges & Universities • Use “College Match” on Family Connections to find a school that has all of your interests Step 2: What is required? • SAT ( www.collegeboard.org ) – Next test, Oct. 11- register by Sept. 12th • ACT ( www.actstudent.org ) – Next test Oct. 25, Register by Sept. 19 • TSI **Fee waivers are available for those students on free or reduced lunch. Students can sign up for one with Mrs. Everett in The College and Career Zone. SAT Boot Camp • • • • • Wednesday, Oct. 1st from 7:30am-2:30 pm MWHS Auditorium Includes test prep workbook and study book Student Cost is $39 Can be paid online with credit card or on paper with cash/check by Sept. 26th Step 3: Applying • Fill out Application www.applytexas.org or www.commonapp.org – Answer all information – Write essays (if applicable) – Pay fee (See Mrs. Everett if used an SAT Fee Waiver) • Send ACT/SAT scores – From www.ACTstudent.org or www.collegeboard.org • Request Transcript – Through Family Connection • Request Recommendations (if needed) – Through Mrs. Everett Step 4: Financing Your Future • National Scholarships – Updated list Family Connections and outside of The Zone • Local Scholarships – Will be announced in the Spring when available and awarded at the Scholarship Night • College Scholarships – Check College webpage for incoming student scholarships – The majority of student scholarships come from the college • Financial Aid – Can apply for PIN # now – Cannot complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) until after taxes have been filed for 2014 year – We will host Financial Aid Night in January • Turn in College Acceptance letters College Deadlines • November 1st – Abilene Christian University • December 1st – Texas A&M, University of Texas at Austin • January 15th – Southern Methodist University • February 1st – Baylor, Southwestern, Texas Christian University • March 1st – Texas Tech University • March 15th – University of North Texas • April 1st – University of Houston • May 1st (or later) – Texas State, Mary Hardin-Baylor, Houston Baptist, Lamar, Sam Houston, Prairie View, Stephen F. Austin. Tarleton, TAMU Branch Schools, UT Branch Schools Community Service • You do not need community service hours to graduate, but it is highly recommended. • For 50 to 99 hours, you receive 1 cord at graduation; for 100 hours, you receive 2 cords. • Hours must be entered into x2VOL (through Family Connections or the app) within the 9 weeks they were earned www.magnoliaisd.org/communityservice Community Service • Summer hours must be entered by Sept. 15th • Seniors will not be able to enter hours after March 30th ASVAB • Free career exploration test for students in grades 10-12 • Offered September 30th, sign up with Mrs. Everett by Sept. 15th Upcoming Recruiter Visits • • • • • • • Teas A&M- September 17th Stephen F. Top 10% Announcement and Banquet • If in current Top 10%- the fall under the automatic acceptance policy for public Texas colleges (UT’s is 7%) • Ranking will include grades through the 3rd 9 Weeks. • Announcement will be on April 14th • Banquet will be on April 27th Parent/Student Meetings Available for parent meetings at 1:00 and 1:45 in the afternoons.
