St. Niklaus
St. Niklaus is the gift-giver in
Germany. He goes around and
rewards good children by
giving them presents.
Krampus is a friend of St. Niklaus who chases bad
children and punishes them by hitting them with
special brooms made of sticks. He also puts bags over
their heads. He looks very scary with horns and lots
of red fur.

Christmas is
celebrated
much the same
in Germany as
it is here. They
have Christmas
trees that they
decorate and
lots of candles
everywhere.
Advent Decorations
People in
Germany
decorate
wreathes with
four candles
to celebrate
the
four days of
advent.
They also
use a small
calendar
with gifts
inside to
count down
to Advent.
Stille Nacht means Silent
Night in German. This song
was written by Joseph Mohr.
He needed music for the
words and Franz Gruber
wrote it for him. It was first
performed in 1818 in a very
small church by the name of
St. Nikolaus on Christmas
Eve. Now it is still sung there
every Christmas Eve at 5
p.m.
