Developing Leaders
Do you think that we have enough leaders
now?
or
Do you think we should just recruit already
proven leaders?
or
Do you think that we need to develop new
leaders?
Developing Leaders

Can you think of some things that new or
potential leaders need to know before
they start the adventure into Leadership
in the Grange?

What would you say to a young new
Grange member before they assume a
leadership role in your Grange?
Developing Leaders
The “New Pencil” principle
What would you say to a brand
new Pencil before you were to
use it?
 4 things that we all need to remember for
ourselves and teach to all potential new
leaders

The New Pencil Principle
1.
“Sharpening”

We can see that they have all the essential
elements to do the job but something has to
be done before they can be used
Not ready to use until someone has taken us
to the sharpener.

This means we are to teach and
educate them!
The New Pencil Principle
Teaching and Educating

2.
“Eraser”

They are not perfect.
*They will make mistakes
You can clean up you mistakes
*Admit them and say “I’m Sorry”
We start off with a little eraser.
*Because we hope they learn and make
fewer mistakes as they go

“What's in Side”
◦ You Attitude
 The foundation for everything
 Will effect all those you encounter
◦ Your abilities
 Learn what they are
 Learn how to best apply them
The New Pencil Principle
4.
“Make a Mark”

All the rest doesn’t matter if you don’t
apply them
This is what people see
This is what makes a difference


The New Pencil Principle
How does a pencil make mark?
It has to give something of it’s self!
And after giving so much after a while
what does the pencil need?
Sharpening!

Developing “old” Leaders
What about us old Pencils?
 Do we need sharpening?
◦ Maybe a little training would be nice

Have we been sharpened before?
◦ It has been a while

Have we been sharpened a lot?
◦ We are getting close to “burn out”
◦ We are getting kind of short
Developing New Leaders
Can we Do it?
Are you willing to do your part to develop
new leaders?
*Share your knowledge
*Teach them
*Give them opportunities
*Mentor them
Some good advice
 It
is literally true that you can succeed best and
quickest by helping others to succeed.
-- Napoleon Hill
 You get the best efforts from others not by lighting
a fire beneath them, but by building a fire within.
-- Bob Nelson
 The best executive is the one who has enough sense
to pick good people to do what he wants done, and
self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with
them while they do it.
-- Theodore Roosevelt
