WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
What does the Bible say happens when
we die?
Ecclesiastes 12:7
Then the dust will return to the earth as
it was, And the spirit will return to God
who gave it.
At death the body goes back to dust;
the spirit returns to God who gave it.
1-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
This spirit which returns to God is not
some entity which is capable of a
conscious existence apart from the body,
but it is the breath of life (James 2:26,
Margin; Job 27:3), which God gave to
make him a living, conscious personality,
Gen. 2:7. At death, that life passes into
God’s hands for safe- keeping until the
resurrection. Death is creation in reverse.
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
Do we go to heaven upon death?
Acts 2:34
“For David did not ascend into the
heavens, but he says himself: ‘The
LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right
hand,
Peter declared that David, who was
very much loved of God, was not in
heaven.

WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
Did David expect to see Heaven?
Psalm 17:15
As for me, I will see Your face in
righteousness; I shall be satisfied
when I awake in Your likeness.
3-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
David expected to go to heaven when
he should awake from sleep at the
resurrection morning when Jesus
would again give him the breath of life.
4-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
When do the righteous go to heaven?
I Thessalonians 4:16-18
For the Lord Himself will descend from
heaven with a shout, with the voice of
the archangel, and with the trumpet of
God. And the dead in Christ will rise
first.
4-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
17- Then we who are alive and remain
shall be caught up together with them
in the clouds to meet the Lord in the
air. And thus we shall always be with
the Lord.
18- Therefore comfort one another with
these words.
4-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
The righteous do not go to heaven until
the coming of Jesus Christ at the last
day, I Thess. 2:19; John 14:3. All life
after death depends upon the
resurrection.
5-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
What part does the resurrection play?
I Corinthians 15:16-18
For if the dead do not rise, then Christ
is not risen:
17- And if Christ is not risen, your faith is
futile; you are still in your sins!
18- Then also those who have fallen
asleep in Christ are perished.
5-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
Without the resurrection, the good
people who have died are PERISHED.
This could not be true if they went to
heaven when they died, there would
be no need of a resurrection. There
would be no reason for Christ to
come back to earth the second time
to gather His saints (John 14:3) if
they had already gone to heaven
5-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
at death. If the wicked go to hell-fire at
death, and the righteous to heaven at
death, there is not need of a judgment
day at the end of time, or for Christ to
come to reward every man according to
his works. (Matthew 16:27; Revelation
22:12)
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
This idea of a person going to hell or
heaven at death destroys the Bible
doctrine of the resurrection, the coming
of Christ, and the judgment at the last
day. There is no text in the Bible, when
rightly under-stood by its relation to all
other texts, that teaches that anybody
goes to hell or heaven at death, because
the Bible does not contradict its own
teachings.

WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
If the dead don’t go to hell or heaven,
where do they go?
Ecclesiastes 3:20
All go to one place: all are from the
dust, and all return to dust.
All go to one place, and that one place
is the grave, where all turn to dust
again. (Job 30:23; John 5:28,29)
6-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
The Bible never speaks of the soul or
the spirit going out of the body at death
to maintain, or to become capable of
maintaining, a conscious existence
somewhere else. EIGHT TIMES THE
BIBLE SPEAKS OF THE SOUL AS GOING
INTO THE GRAVE. Acts 2:31; Isa. 38:17;
Job 33:18,22,28,30; Psalms 30:3; 89:48
7-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
What does the soul know after death?
Psalms 146:3,4
Do not put your trust in princes, Nor in
a son of man, in whom there is no help.
4- His spirit departs, he returns to his
earth; In that very day his plans perish.
7-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
When a man dies, his soul is
unconscious until the resurrection.
THE SOUL IS THE ACCOUNTABLE PART
OF MAN THAT SINS, Eze. 18:4; Ps. 139:14.
This is why the soul of Jesus had to die to
atone for the sins of our souls, Isa.
53:10,12.
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
Would you praise God if you were in
heaven?
Psalms 115:17
The dead do not praise the LORD, Nor
any who go down into silence.
If the righteous were in heaven, they
would certainly be praising the Lord:
but this text says that the dead praise
not the Lord.

WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
Are the dead looking down on us from
heaven?
Job 14:12 & 21
So man lies down and does not rise. Till
the heavens are no more, They will not
awake Nor be roused from their sleep.
9-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
21- His sons come to honor, and he does
not know it; They are brought low, and
he does not perceive it.
The dead do not know anything after
death because they are unconscious. In
the Bible, death is called a sleep 54 times;
thus we understand that the dead are
unconscious, just as a person is
unconscious who is in a deep sleep.
9-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
The breath of life from God made Adam
a living soul, a conscious being; and
when that breath of life is taken away at
his death, it would necessarily leave
him to be a dead soul: an unconscious
being until the resurrection, when the
breath of life, or the spirit, is put back
into him again.
10-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
What do the dead know?
Ecclesiastes 9:5-6
For the living know that they will die;
But the dead know nothing, Any they
have no more reward, For the memory
of them is forgotten.
10-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
6- Also their love, their hatred, and their
envy, have now perished; Nevermore
will they have a share In anything
done under the sun.
The dead do not know anything.
When a Christian dies, the next
moment, as for as any sensations are
concerned, he is with Christ to stay.
10-WD
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
The lapse of time between a Christian’s
death and Jesus’ second coming, the
glorious resurrection day, will seem to
him like an instant of time. To him it will
seem but the next moment after he
closes his eyes in death, for the passing
of time means nothing. Soon there will
be a day of reunion with loved ones who
have died in Christ.
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
Do you now have a different understanding of where the dead are?
Are you looking forward to that day
when Jesus comes and we will have
that great reunion with our loved ones?
The End
