R.I.S.E: Renewable & Integrated Systems of Energy
A technical model for the energy, water, sanitation and recycling needs for a sustainable community
Students: Paola Davalos, Sergio Baltodano, Michael Enriquez, Natalia Duque, Babacar Cisse
Advising Professors: Andrés Tremante, Berrin Tansel

Problem Statement
Proposed Designs
There is a need for an interdisciplinary approach to
assess technical solutions to some of mankind's
most pressing issues: energy and water security,
climate change, plastic waste reuse, and the
development of a community focused expertise in
sustainability.
 Manual grinder shreds plastic waste
 Temperature controller allows
processing of multiple types of
plastics
 Rotating heating mechanism
extrudes grinded plastic into
filament for 3D printing.

Processing
 Pico-hydro water wheel is printed
with recycled material
 Energy from flowing water is
converted to electricity through use
of the water wheel and a generator
 Sergio Baltodano: Material testing,
examination of energy storage options, and
energy unit data acquisition
 Michael Enriquez: Design of recycling unit
and parts acquisition
 Babacar Cisse: Design and analysis of pico

 Develop an innovative recycler to
transform used plastics into 3D printing
material
 Extrude recycled filament at a rate of at
least 4 ft/min
 Assure material properties of recycled
plastics are within the range of virgin
thermoplastics. (HDPE) & (PET)
 Design a low-head pico-hydro turbine
using recycled material to generate at
least 10 Watts
