Fluke 805 Vibration Meter
Redefining Vibration Screening
1
Types of Vibration Testing
Simple vibration screening: Overall vibration/bearing measurements
• Use vibration screening tools to make quick “go” or “no go” decisions by
checking the value against a pre-set alarm level, comparing it to ISO Standards
(ISO 10816) and trending the results over time.
2
What does it measure?
-
805 Vibration Meter is
Fluke’s multifunction
vibration checker which
• Provides quantifiable
results of bearing
condition, overall
vibration,
temperature
• Assesses the severity
on a severity scale
• Provides ability to
upload the data to PC
for later trending
3
The Problem
Problem: Confusing
“I don’t understand what
the numbers mean.
What indicates a
problem?”
Solution:
STRAIGHTFORWARD
Four-level severity scale
both overall vibration
and bearing condition
using
textual alerts
(Good, Satisfactory,
Unsatisfactory,
Unacceptable)
The Solution
Problem: Not enough data
“Vibration pens do not provide
enough data to provide good
value to a ‘true’ reliability
program.”
Solution:
A COMPLETE SOLUTION
A meter—not a pen—that
measures overall vibration,
bearing condition and
temperature reliably
4
The Problem
The Solution
Problem: Unreliable
“The pens only work well when
applied exactly correctly and
they’ve caused a lot of false
alarms mostly because of
technician error.”
Solution: RELIABLE
Innovative sensor design,
force sensor and tip angle
ensure quick readings &
consistent results: Angle and
pressure has minimal impact
on results
(Patent pending)
5
The Problem
The Solution
Problem: Manual
“The data from the pen needs to fit into our
existing operator rounds tracking program,
which means I need to be able to upload it
to Excel—easily.”
Solution: DATA LOGGING
• View previous measurements in device
• Export to Excel for trending
• Comparison to ISO Standards
6
The Problem
The Solution
Problem: Difficult
“They’re a pain to use—I have to
input a lot of data—not just RPM
range and type of equipment but
shaft diameter and actual RPM.”
Solution: EASY
• Sensor sensitivity to a wide
range of frequencies covering
most machine and
component types,
• Minimizes the user inputs to
RPM range and equipment
type.
• Green light indicating right
amount of pressure is applied
Problem: Fragile
“Made of light-weight plastic. I feel
like it will break the first time that I
drop it”
Solution: RUGGED
• Made of tough, heavy plastic.
• Feels solid and well-balanced in
your hand.
7
Fluke 805 redefines vibration screening
• Performs in low frequency range to measure overall vibration
and in high frequency range to identify bearing faults.
• Assesses severity on a four-level scale for both overall vibration
and bearings.
• Uses the new and innovative Crest Factor Plus algorithm.
8
What is Crest Factor +?
• A proprietary, weighted calculation involving several waveform
parameters, such as the Crest Factor, the Peak value, and the
RMS value algorithm used to identify bearing faults.
9
Fluke 805 checks against 37 machine categories
Chiller (refrigeration)
• Reciprocating (Open motor and compressor
separate)
• Reciprocating (Hermetic motor and compressor)
• Centrifugal (Hermetic or Open Motor
Fans
• Belt-driven Fans 1800 to 3600 RPM
• Belt-driven fans 600 to 1799 RPM
• General direct drive fans (direct coupled)
• Vacuum blowers (belt or direct drive)
• Large forced draft fans (fluid film brgs.)
• Large induced draft fans (fluid film brgs.)
• Shaft-mounted integral fan (extended motor shaft)
• Axial flow fans (belt or direct drive)
Cooling tower drives
• Long, hollow drive shaft (motor)
• Belt drive (motor and fan - all arrangements)
• Direct drive (motor and fan - all arrangements
Centrifugal Pumps
Note: height is measured from grade to top motor bearing
• Vertical pumps (12’ to 20’ height)
• Vertical pumps (8’ to 12’ height)
• Vertical pumps (5’ to 8’ height)
• Vertical pumps (0’ to 5’ height)
• Horizontal centrifugal end suction pumps – direct
coupled
• Horizontal centrifugal double suction pumps –
direct coupled
• Boiler feed pumps (turbine or motor driven)
Positive Displacement Pumps
• Positive displacement horizontal piston pumps
(under load)
• Positive displacement horizontal gear pumps (under
load)
Air compressors
• Reciprocating
• Rotary screw
• Centrifugal with or without external gearbox
• Centrifugal – internal gear (axial meas.)
• Centrifugal – internal gear (radial meas.)
Blowers
• Lobe-type rotary blowers (belt or direct drive)
• Multi-stage centrifugal blowers (direct drive)
Generic gearboxes (rolling element bearings)
• Single stage gearbox
Machine tools
• Motor
• Gearbox input
• Gearbox output
• Spindles – roughing operations
• Spindles – machine finishing
• Spindles – critical finishing
10
How to use the 805
• Supports an optional external sensor
• Any standard ICP type, (100 mV/g) single channel accelerometer
• If external sensor is connected, the users will be able to measure only overall
vibration (no CF+ and temperature measurement)
11
How to use the 805
• The meter has an audio
connector for headphones –
useful for detection of
unusual machine sounds.
• Press and hold the measure
button to listen with sensor
tip pressed against bearing.
12
Benefits of Trending with Vibration Meter
• Export measurements to Excel template on PC to
trend overall vibration, CF+, and IR temperature.
• Looking at the number alone for the overall
vibration or bearing condition might not be of
much benefit
• What is normal or what indicates a problem?
• 805 users can use the severity assessment and
trending functionality to overcome this obstacle.
13
Benefits of Trending with Vibration Meter
• After operator rounds, trend with preconfigured Excel plot graphs and compare
to ISO Standards (10616-1, -3 and -7).
• If there is an abnormality, it can be identified by using the trend charts.
• The user can now see a clear picture of the changing bearing condition and
deteriorating health of the machine

Compare 805 and 810
Vibration Meter
Front line mechanical maintenance teams need:
•
•
•
•
A quick screening tool to fit into existing rounds
Reliable / repeatable measurements of rotating equipment to
make imperative go/no-go maintenance decisions
Ability to trend readings over time and notify a consultant or
reliability engineer when something abnormal arises
Quick understanding of overall machine and bearing condition,
to decide on repairs and repair equipment
Vibration Tester
Maintenance troubleshooters need:
•
•
•
•
Quick answers on specific machine condition fault/severity
Extensive setup, trending, analysis, and onsite expert not
needed to get machine condition answers
Ability to trend machine fault severity over time to help decide
when to generate a work order for repair
Majority of rotating machines are basic enough for the vibration
tester to be the perfect choice
Forget the Pen… Think METER
Fluke 805 is the most reliable and the user
intuitive vibration screening device for
frontline troubleshooting teams.
FOOLPROOF instead of false alarms
REPEATABLE instead of random
