RECRUITMENT AT VENUES
Hello, my name is X and I’m a X for Project PrEPare, a collaborative research study being conducted through X. This pre-exposure
prophylaxis (PrEP) study aims to obtain additional safety information about Truvada and to evaluate its usage and sexual risk
behavior patterns among young men who have sex with men who are provided with both the medicine, and information about its
safety and effectiveness.
Because of the work that you do, we consider you to be a gatekeeper of this particular community. We are contacting you in hopes
of forming a collaboration with you, which would involve very little work on your part. Specifically, we would like to get your
permission to have access to your event X in the least intrusive way possible, for the purpose of recruiting participants for this very
important study. We would also like to provide free condoms and lube for those that want them. If you are open to that, I just have
a couple of quick questions to ask you with regards to logistics, and a memorandum of agreement that I will ask you to sign so that
I can document our understanding.
Do you agree to allow our research team access to your event, with the understanding that we will be as least intrusive as
possible?
Are you willing to provide us with space at your event for the purpose of recruitment, as well as where we can display/distribute
materials related to our study and condom packets? (Note: this question may be omitted. Sometimes it’s better if you can walk
around the venue and engage people rather than being placed at a table)
Would you or someone else be the best point of contact for working out these logistics?
What would be the best method for contacting you (this person) and the preferable time of day?
Thank you for your time, and for agreeing to allow us into your space for the purpose of recruiting participants into this very
important research study. Upon arriving at your event/space, our team members will identify themselves the contact person that
you have designated, by either an ID badge or their Project PrEPare business card. Should you have any questions or concerns
about our presence at your event or about the study in general, please feel free to contact me at X.

“Message to potential participant:”
Hello my name is Pedro and I wanted to tell you about a paid project for young men who
are interested in protecting their sexual health that I think you might be interested in. Is it
ok if I briefly provide you with more information about this project?
“Response.”
“Message to potential participant:”
This project is about providing individuals with an FDA-approved drug called Truvada to
protect them from becoming infected with HIV. This prevention method is called PrEP. We
are doing this study to learn about how practical it is to use PrEP with young men who have
sex with other men.

Subject: Project PrEPare
Hello!
Thank you for chatting with us over your mobile phone or tablet and filling out your responses to the form. We really appreci ate your time and effort. Based on your answers
to these questions, you are eligible to take part in this study. That means that if you want to take part in the research, yo u may.
If you provided your contact information, one of our study staff members will be in contact with you to schedule an appointment. If you did not provide contact information
and you are interested in participating, please contact Pedro at +1 (708) 683-9415 or email at [email protected] to schedule an appointment.
For your first visit, we will need for you to come to the Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center, which is located at 2020 W. Harrison Chicago, IL 60612.
During this visit, we will tell you the purpose of the study, what you will be asked to do in this study, the possible risks and benefits, and your rights as a volunteer. We want
you to ask any questions you may have about this study. When all of your questions are answered, you can decide if you want to be in the study. This process is called
“informed consent.” Once you understand the study and all of your questions have been answered, if you still want to take par t then you will be asked to sign this consent
form. You will be given a signed copy of this form to keep.
Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. You decide if you want to be in this study. You may decide not to t ake part in this study. You may also stop taking
part in the study at any time once enrolled.
You are being asked to take part in this study because you are between 18 and 22 years of age and may be at risk of becoming infected with HIV.
The study will definitely last one year, but participants may be asked to participate for about two years.
We will ask you information about yourself, for example contact information, medical information. We will conduct a physical exam. We wil also have some tests done to
confirm that you are able to participate in the study. For example we will test you for HIV and Hepatitis B. We will also pro vide you with condoms and discuss your sexual
health practices and how you can keep yourself healthy.
Remember, my name is Pedro and you may call me at +1 (708) 683-9415 if you have any questions.
To Discuss Scheduling:
Study visits typically take place between 9AM to 11AM, 9:30AM to 10:30AM, 10AM to 12PM, 10:30AM to 12:30PM, or 11AM to 1PM. W ould you be available during the
morning for a two hour block on either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday?
FACEBOOK
• Facebook Group for Staff:
• Two Facebook pages so far:
• https://www.facebook.com/pages/Project-PrEPare/103217659715688
Again, I would rather promote collaboration rather than having multiple project pages.
It is still early enough that we can jointly edit a single page. Let me know if you would
rather join in on the projectprepare2 page than setup your own.
Given concerns around what type of content might be posted, I have posted a “source
list.” This source list can definitely grow.
