1 – Research activities linked to the
integration of distributed generation

General objectives :



To assess the technical and economical constraints linked to the
integration of dispersed electricity generation into electricity
grids
To develop specific control algorithms, including prediction
techniques, in order to help better and larger integration of RES
To develop simulation tools

integration of distributed generation
Links with MicroCheap :


Most of the european "integration projects"
consider only RE systems (wind, PV, solar, …)
and "classical" micro-cogen (fossil driven)
A link is easy to make if simple models are
available for biomass micro-cogen units

2 – Research activities linked to the
Biomass-Hydrogen chain

Objective :


To analyse and to develop new technologies for the biomasshydrogen transformation
To analyse and to develop PEM FC based systems for cogeneration

Catalytic reforming of bio-ethanol
Reforming processes in cold plasmas
Gazeification of solid biomass (collaboration with the Center for
Energy and Environment in Albi and with the N-GHY company, a
startup in fuel processors for fuel cells)
Project EPACOP, test in real conditions of 5 demonstration plants,
equiped with 5 kWe PEM FC (using natural gas).

Research is today focussing on technological
bottlenecks
MicroCheap could help to compare various cogeneration
chains :

NG/turbine or engine
Biomass/H2/FC
Biomass/Stirling
…
In terms of efficiencies, emissions, …

3 Modelling the impact of dispersed
generation on low voltage grids

Objective :



Under an hypothesis of massive integration of small distributed
generation systems in low voltage grids, to assess the
compatibility of electricity injection with technical grid
constraints
Methodology : adaptation of classical load flow grid modelling to
the case of distributed electricity injection
Tool developped : JPelec
MicroCHEAP – Athens – September 2006
JPélec : a mini-grid simulation tool for
steady-state studies
• Load-flow calculation (Newton-Raphson algorithm)
• Classical power network components
• Renewable energy and distributed generation components
• Simulation over 24 hours with one hour time-step
• Graphical user friendly interface
• Accurate models
• Weather module to estimate radiation on inclined plane
• Free (cf www-cep.cma.fr/Public/title_soft/title_soft_jpelec/view)
This software is dedicated to 3 types of users :
engineering and design departments
universities
research centers
