Engaging librarians in RDM: approaches & lessons learned Simon Huggard, Deputy Director, Research and Collections La Trobe University Library ANDS Webinar, 12 February 2015 latrobe.edu.au CRICOS Provider 00115M Acknowledgements This presentation is an adaptation of: Simon Huggard; Kerry Sullivan; Mina Nichols-Boyd. Opening up the dialogue on research data: how librarians at La Trobe University are enabling the process. Paper presented at the eResearch Australasia 2014 Conference, Melbourne 27-31 October. https://eresearchau.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/wednesday-1400-lake-simonhuggard.pdf La Trobe University 2 “it embodies the notion that universities should turn ideas on their heads.” Melbourne sculptor Charles Robb http://www.onlymelbourne.com.au/statue-charles-la-trobe La Trobe University 3 La Trobe’s ‘Future Ready’ research agenda La Trobe University • Improve research quality • Identify, develop and implement strategic research partnerships • Increase cross–disciplinary research • Double research income • Improve student satisfaction as measured by the Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire • Derive a high proportion of research income from Research Focus Areas • Improve international researchbased ranking 4 Research at La Trobe University latrobe.edu.au/research/ • 1,389 researchers: 339 research staff, 1050 teaching & research staff • 1,700 HDR students • 32 Research Institutes Centres • 2 Research Development Parks • 20 Disciplinary Research Programs • 5 Research Focus Areas (RFAs): Building healthy communities Securing food, water and the environment Sport exercise and rehabilitation Transforming human societies Understanding disease La Trobe University 5 Previous approaches to research data management training In 2012 – we had a separate Digital Infrastructure Team (focused on repository, research data management and ANDS projects). The small DI team were technically focused…and time poor to pursue researchers In mid 2013: 2 Faculty Librarians commenced in the Digital Infrastructure unit 1 day a week for an initial period of 8 weeks Between 2013-2014, 10 staff had similar placements Kerry Sullivan commenced in DI in the first secondment, and continued (one day per week) as a mentor of Librarians as they came into Digital Infrastructure La Trobe University 6 Research Data Management – previous structure La Trobe University 7 Research Team La Trobe University 8 Current approach • Dedicated Research Advisors and Content/repository team in the Library to support research • New structure is focused on a range of services: * Research data management & publishing of research data in Research Online * Grant process and guidance regarding RDMP, mandatory open access deposit, etc. * HERDC – new processes * Researcher training for HDRs and academics * Help with publication management * Reference management software and other related tools * Help with keeping up to date with literature; literature searches; literature reviews * Researcher profiles, identifiers, publicising your research, citations, research impact * DOIs and other identifiers * Collections to support research La Trobe University 9 Previous training approach • General introduction • Mentoring • Self-paced learning • Discussion as issues arose (working within the DI unit) • Contact with academics ; email / then face to face • Training template – for training HDRs and academics • LibGuide on RDM La Trobe University 10 Drivers for change Why should researchers put data in the Research Online repository? NHMRC revised policy on the dissemination of research findings NHMRC therefore requires that any publications arising from an NHMRC supported research project must be deposited into an open access institutional repository within a twelve month period from the date of publication. [2012] NHMRC therefore encourages researchers to consider the benefits of depositing their data and any publications arising from a research project in an appropriate subject and/or institutional repository wherever such a repository is available to the researcher(s). [2007] ARC open access policy The overarching aim of ARC’s Policy is to ensure that the findings of publicly funded research are made available to the wider public as soon as possible. Both the research community and the public gain from knowledge derived from ARC funded research, and both wish to derive maximum benefit from these outputs. • New approach: long term • More embedded approach • More time needed to learn terminology, understand requirements, etc (half of the new Research Advantage team are completely new to this work) • More time needed to train up staff La Trobe University 20 What have Librarians said themselves? • We have normalised research lifecycle support into our day to day work • It’s a no brainer - data management is important for our University and researchers e.g. institutional rankings • We have the framework in place – but we need to continue to develop the service • Ongoing training to nurture success • Our current focus is collecting new data • The University is supportive of the Library’s role in data management • And we have a new structure – which has potential for growth – more staff on board and research at its centre...there will be many more avenues to develop services La Trobe University 21 What have Librarians said themselves? • Natural fit for Faculty Librarians adopting data management work, literature published on this topic e.g. established relationships and knowledge • It was a big learning curve, still so much to learn… • Positive opportunity: professional, personal and team development • Time dedicated to secondment was not enough • It’s a huge job – so many things to do, and balancing both roles i.e. Faculty Librarian vs Data Librarian…which hat am I wearing today?! • Better communication and awareness of the roles involved in data management (both Library and University) • A better understanding and appreciation of researchers’ sensitivity with their data • More success with known academics; less so with others on initial contact e.g. cold calling • New ways of engaging with researchers – this is critical La Trobe University 22 Future (current) training • Training of new staff in all areas • HERDC / publications management/ repository • Skills assessment – identification of courses and training required • Liaison role ; partnerships ; connecting with researchers • ISNIs ; ORCIDs; Profiles • Staff training (research support) • Registry of La Trobe data sets • Digitisation • Copyright ; relevant legislation ; ARC and NHMRC guidelines • Research data management planning in detail • Research Commons La Trobe University 23 Acknowledgements • • • • • • • • Jenny Corbin Kerry Sullivan Caroline Ondracek Rickie-Lee Morey Kate Freedman Tracy Robertson Clayton Bolitho Mina Nichols-Boyd • • • • • • • Nicole Sackers Roderick Sadler Graeme Oke Charlie Ambrose Simon Huggard Fiona Salisbury Christine Lucas New Team is planning ongoing training: Eva Fisch, Tracy Robertson, Roderick Sadler (and others in the Research Team) La Trobe University 24 Thank you Simon Huggard, Deputy Director, Research and Collections La Trobe University Library T: 03 9479 5173 | M: 0425 774 260 | E: [email protected] latrobe.edu.au CRICOS Provider 00115M
