What is the Power requirement in a Diesel Generator Set ?
• Starting System:
Power required to initiate the rotation of engine
shaft (Torque) – High Currents for shorter
duration
• Ignition System:
Power is supplied to the coil for ignition
• Charging System: Engine is coupled to the ALTERNATOR which will
generate EMF to charge the battery.

Existing System
• Conventional Flooded Battery / Low Maintenance LA
Requires Maintenance (specific gravity checks and top-up)
• Charging through Alternator:
Needs to run the DG set periodically to charge the battery
High voltage requires frequent topping - up

Requirements of an Engine Starting battery
• High cranking current capability with minimum voltage drop
• Ability to crank cold engines
• Good low temperature performance
• Excellent recharge capability
• No emission of corrosive fumes
• Long Shelf and Cycle life

Xcell – Generator Starting System
Pure Lead Power Pack
Pure Lead Tin Battery along with in-built SMPS charger
(Switch Mode Power Supply)
PLT Battery :
Capable of delivering high currents for shorter
durations which are required to start the engine
SMPS Charger: Replenishes the energy drawn by the battery
and keeps the battery at 100% SOC

“ PLT - Pure Lead Tin Battery for Engine Starting Application”
Why?
The instantaneous power / energy required to start an engine will
be delivered from the electrode surface area.
More thin electrodes in same volume will deliver high cranking
currents.

PLT Battery
• Corrosion-resistant alloy
• Thin plate design
• High-grade raw materials
• Recombinant VRLA design – works on “Gas Recombination Principle”
• 100% rated capacity from very first cycle onwards

PLT Batteries
• First introduced in the mid 1980’s
• Fully established by mid 1990’s
• Made only by
 Hawker / Enersys (UK)
 Optima (USA) – very limited range for SLI
 HBL Power Systems (India) – very wide range

PLT Batteries – Superior Features
• High Discharge Rates
Peak powers are of the order of 25 times the C20 Capacity
• Quick recharge capability – Low Internal Resistance
• Wide operating temperature range (-40 to 50°C)
• Less space and weight
• Low self discharge, long shelf life due to low internal resistance
• Designed to meet vibrations

Xcell Sizing
Current required to start the genset engine depends on following:
• Starter motor rating
• Efficiency of starter motor
• Resistance offered by the engine as a result of viscosity of the
engine oil depending on its temperature
• Ambient temperature
• No. of starts & each crank duration

Advantages with Xcell
• No Initial Filling and Charging
• Self – Discharge is Less
- Does not require to run the DG set to charge the battery (or)
- Does not require any separate equipment to charge the
battery.
• No Terminal corrosion and wear out
• Power consumption is less even it is continuously connected to AC
power supply
• More Reliable start even at low temperatures
• More Number of starts with a single charge
