False hope and lies
• There was some talk this week of Hamas agreeing a truce with Israel.
However Hamas’s political leader Khaled Meshaal speaking in Syria,
where he lives in exile, said the Palestinian state must have "Jerusalem
as its capital, with genuine sovereignty, without settlements".
• Mr Abbas who met President Putin last week met President Bush this
week. Mr Bush said he was committed to "a viable state, a state that
doesn't look like Swiss cheese, a state that provides hope".
• The reference to Swiss cheese is the fact that on the West Bank there are
many settlements that Israel wants to keep. If they do keep them then
they would be pockets of Jewish land in amongst the new Palestinian
state. Hence a map would look like Swiss cheese. In effect President Bush
is saying that Israel must withdraw from the whole of the West Bank not
some of it. In Joel 3 we read of the nations who have “parted” God’s
land. The word parted means “apportioned” or “divided”.

MOSCOW (AP) - Russia on Thursday sharply

said Russia affirms the need to fight terrorism
and called for the immediate release of captive
Israeli soldiers, but it added that "the

using too much force.
The comment echoed a statement by
President Vladimir Putin, who said while
hosting a summit of the Group of Eight nations
Saturday that Russia had the impression Israel
was "pursuing wider goals" than the return of
abducted soldiers.

Russian Fleet Worries Israel

Russia’s plans to restore its permanent naval presence in the
Mediterranean Sea are causing serious concern in Israel. The
Israelis think that the Syrian ports the Russians are most likely to
use will turn into major centers of electronic surveillance and air
defense centers and, as such, threats to Israel’s national security.
Russian experts say that Moscow’s plans are unlikely to come to
fruition any time soon. There is neither the money nor the technical
capacity for it.

Israel is looking into reports that Russia plans to sell 250 advanced long-range
Sukhoi-30 fighter jets to Iran in an unprecedented billion-dollar deal.

According to reports, in addition to the fighter jets, Teheran also plans to
purchase a number of aerial fuel tankers that are compatible with the Sukhoi
and capable of extending its range by thousands of kilometers. Defense
officials said the Sukhoi sale would grant Iran long-range offensive capabilities.

Two thousand years ago Roman soldiers united enormous territories from Britain to Athens,
from the Rhine to the Iberian peninsula, by the sword. Europe has survived many destructive wars and the
collapse of empires. It overcame the dictatorship of tyrants and the horrors of Nazism, but at the
same time lived through the Renaissance and sowed the seeds of democracy.
It was Europe that formulated the noble ideas of humanism and the Enlightenment,
which formed the foundation of European civilisation.
A stable, prosperous and united Europe is in our interests. European integration is an integral part of
the emerging multipolar world order. That the EU is becoming an increasingly authoritative and
influential centre of world politics, considerably contributing to regional and global security, is
important. The development of multifaceted ties with the EU is Russia’s principled choice. In the
foreseeable future, for obviousreasons, we have no intention of either joining the EU or establishing
any form of institutional association with it.
Russia intends to build its relations with the EU on a pragmatic basis with a treaty and a strategic
partnership. In this regard I agree with Romano Prodi’s view of Russian-EU relations: “Anything but
institutions.”
We are prepared to develop this partnership to a maximum extent, expecting of course that our
partners will meet us halfway along this road.
I am convinced that the development of relations between Russia and the EU has logically led us to
the need for a new treaty on strategic partnership.
The treaty should become an instrument capable of ensuring a higher level of economic integration a
interaction, providing for freedom and security on the European continent. We understand all the diffic
of our partners in developing one position.
We agree that it takes time. It is also clear that any pause in the dialogue is always going to be
counterproductive.

• There was a time after the fall of Communism when small Protestant
congregations blossomed here in southwestern Russia, when a church was
almost as easy to set up as a general store. Today, this industrial region has
become emblematic of the suppression of religious freedom under
President Vladimir Putin.
• Just as the government has tightened control over political life, so, too,
has it intruded in matters of faith. The Kremlin's surrogates in many areas
have turned the Russian Orthodox Church into a de facto official religion,
warding off other Christian denominations that seem to offer the most
significant competition for worshipers. They have all but banned
proselytizing by Protestants and discouraged Protestant worship through a
variety of harassing measures, according to dozens of interviews with
government officials and religious leaders across Russia.

• When St. Vladimir accepted Christianity in 989, Russia took the first step in
what would become a mission to assume the heritage of Constantinople.
the Grand Dukes of Moscow had shaken off the hold of the remaining
Mongol successor states, and the "New Rome" of Constantinople had itself
fallen to the Turks in 1453, the way was clear for Moscow to become the
"Third Rome" and the Duke the "Tsar of All the Russias." Universal Roman
