The City of Clarksville June 18, 2013 Your partner for smart, efficient and green facilities "The price of light is less than the cost of darkness.“ - Arthur C. Nielsen “In God we trust, all others bring data.” “The most important figures that one needs for management are unknown or unknowable.” - Dr. W. Edwards Deming “Out of the Crisis” 1982 “Probably the best advice I ever got came from when I was in engineering school. That advice was: if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. If you can’t measure something, you don’t know enough about it to actually understand how to control it.” - Harold DePriest President and CEO, Chattanooga’s EPB (Electric Power Board.) Chattanooga TN Leads the Way...AGAIN! Chattanooga Tennessee is the first city to deploy a city-wide, low-energy lighting solution with utilitycertified metrology inside every light to measure energy consumption. Chattanooga is increasing public safety by doubling its lumen output during peak hours and conserving energy and cost by reducing output for non-peak hours. Using Sensus Lighting Control, enabled by the AMI wireless network, Chattanooga police officers can control individual lights – maximizing brightness from the safety of their car or flashing the lights for emergency alerts. The result is improved safety for the citizens with cost savings for the city. What’s more, the on-board metrology measures energy consumption and reports it back to the utility’s billing system – something no other street light system offers today. Plus, the same network infrastructure will become the platform for hosting the deployment of future applications. Frazier Avenue Before After Demand is Exceeding Supply What's the Solution? Increase Power Production or Reduce Demand. (MW) Less coal power to be used by 2015 Projected Firm Requirements Budget Projected TVA Capacity Shortfall Existing Firm Supply Fact: Energy Costs WILL Increase • • • The current market-clearing price for 2012 capacity is $16 per megawatt… By 2015 Market Clearing price is estimated to exceed $136 per megawatt. Other regions will increase even higher: • Mid-Atlantic area (NJ, DE, PA, and DC)= $167 per megawatt • Northern Ohio territory = $357 per megawatt Reference: http://energycommerce.house.gov/comment/reply/1992 • Based today’s energy cost, many cities are being forced to turn off street lights to save money. – Colorado Springs turned off 35% of their light. – Santa Rosa, CA – turned off 40% of their lights – Detroit – turned off 50% of their lights • What are the factors for the skyrocketing prices ? – EPA is forcing the retirements of existing coal-fired generation by 2015. – Not enough alternative energy replacement , or reduction in consumption, will force unprecedented spikes in energy costs. Federal Regulations Are Driving Green Energy Regulated Non-Regulated When it comes to non regulated carbon reduction solutions, lighting is #1 and Smart Grid automation is #2 . Siemens/GGL uses both…. The Formula for Measuring Energy Reduction Adjustable Low Energy Lighting + Advanced Meter Infrastructure = Measured Energy Savings and Carbon output! Economical Safety • Wireless network infrastructure connects each light to a secured internet cloud server host • Improved lighting management • Utility-certified metrology and reporting. • Never pay again the fixed flat rates for lights that are not working (up to10% of the total power bill cost). • X5 longer Life • Measure up to 75% saved energy • Revitalization to the city commerce • Creating American Jobs • Increased lighting on demand during energy saving mode. • Weather emergency warnings: slow flashing • Campus lock down warnings: fast flash • Emergency alert and evacuation device hosting • No lights out policy: built in alarms • Delayed recovery • Instant ON Environmental • Replace inadequate lighting with X improved lighting • Light pollution reduction • Carbon footprint reduction • Dusk to dawn delays “If You Can Measure It, You Can Manage It.” Wireless AMI Technology is the core to energy management and metering – setting GGL apart from competitors. Dashboard The entire system can be summarized and monitored at a glance. Mapping Each light appears with a visual status • Green – everything functioning properly • Red – alarm established Mapping Using an intuitive click-and-drag feature, the user can select one or more lights for energy management scheduling or manually override settings for increased light output or flashing Profiles and Benchmarks As each new light is installed, a detailed profile describes the vitals of the new light and also establishes details for the old lights as a measured benchmark. Certified energy and carbon credit savings are instantly calculated. Instant Alarms The on-board meter monitors each light. If a single light stops working, an alarm is established within 15 seconds and remains open until cleared. A work order can be automatically issued through the 311 service. Analytics “The most important figures that one needs for management are unknown or unknowable” Dr. Deming “Out of the Crisis” 1982 Graphic analytics display instant consumption energy savings from day to day. Adjustments can be made to fine tune energy savings. Usage data is formatted and delivered to the utility’s billing system monthly. Chattanooga, TN The entire city is prescheduled for energy savings. 100% Power 25% Power After midnight, the power to the light automatically reduces to 25%. The light output actually never drops below ANSI roadway specifications. Chattanooga, TN If needed, all or a selection of lights can be quickly returned to full power, or turned to flash in the event of a security concern. 25% Power http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvdMiRE2riQ 100% Power Chattanooga, TN Board Street and Aquarium Way Before After Chattanooga, TN Chattanooga, TN Chattanooga, TN Chattanooga, TN GGL and Sensus Lighting Control Systems • • • • • • • • • • • • • Network infrastructure base Measured energy savings Utility-certified metering Cloud server hosting Carbon credit Manual on/off/dimming Outage alarm with self diagnostics Delayed auto restart Brownout monitoring Energy usage analytical data Programmable energy saving schedule 20 years of sunrise/sunset table GPS mapping and location • • • • • • • • • • • Manual schedule override Programmable or manual flash Increased lumen output Programmable chase/flash API interface Incorporate weather sensors Custom groupings Built in event log Extended lamp life +50,000 hours 50% to 75% reduced energy consumption Extended warranty available Measured Savings Replace Flat Rate Billing •The city now owns the lighting asset, with a built in utility certified AMI power meter. •As each obsolete light is taken down, the total associated flat rate comes off of the monthly power bill. ($9.51 average per month) • Since the city now owns and maintain the equipment, therefore there is no further need for a facility cost that includes depreciation, and maintenance. • As each new light is installed, it is established with a metered account, and charged only for the energy each light consumes.
