What are Supplemental
Educational Services (SES)?
• Free tutoring available to
students from low-income
families at some schools
• Extra academic help to
students in reading, math, or
science while their schools
improve their program
• Authorized by federal
education law

Which schools offer SES?
• A federal education law called No Child Left
Behind (NCLB) says that all public schools
have to meet some basic standards.
– Those standards are called Adequate Yearly
Progress (AYP).
• Some schools offer a special program called
Title I, which provides extra help for students
who are behind academically or at risk of
falling behind.
– These are called “Title I schools.”

Which schools
offer SES?
• Title I schools that
don’t meet the AYP
standards for at
least two years are
called “schools
needing
improvement.”
• If a Title I school
stays in “needs
improvement” for
another year, it must
offer SES.

How Can SES
Help Students?

student’s individual
needs

achievement and study
habits

learning attitudes and
behaviors

Tutoring and
Homework are
Different
• Tutoring is extra time
learning reading,
math, or science
• Tutoring is not
homework time
• Students will still need
time at home to
complete school
assignments and
study

FIVE STEPS TO FREE TUTORING
© 2010, PACER Center
Step 1: Is your child eligible?
• Every year, MDE releases a list of
schools that did not make AYP. Those
schools must inform parents
• Did you receive a letter about AYP?
• Does your child receive free or
reduced price lunch?
• You may also check your school’s
report card at education.state.mn.us

Step 2: Contact your district
• Once you know that your child is
eligible, call your school district office
and ask to speak to the person in
charge of SES
• You will need:
– A list of providers and descriptions of their
programs
– Enrollment dates and forms

Step 3: Choose a provider
• Questions to ask
–
–
–
–
–
–
–

How many times per week?
How many weeks?
What are the tutors’ qualifications?
What subject areas are covered?
How do I know your services are effective?
How will you inform me of my child’s
progress?
– How will you work with my child’s teachers?

district

your child’s tutoring

Step 5: Support your child’s
progress
• Ask the provider what you can do to help
your child reach his or her goals
• Make sure your child attends all sessions
• Make sure your child keeps up with
homework; tutoring is not homework time
• Review your child’s progress, and share
information with your child’s teacher
• If you have concerns, contact the district
