• North American Tail Light Operation
– (at least on my ‘72)
• Modification for European Tail Light
• Enhanced Modification for Euro Tail Light
– Get back the lost brake light
• Trick Modification for Euro Tail Light
– Get back the lost brake light and make it brighter
during the day with a simple diode circuit.
For added brightness and much faster turn
on time, use the 3 Watt Luxeon LED bulb
from www.superbrightleds.com.
Model Red 1157-RLX3 instead of an 1157
incandescent.

The large filament in an 1157 bulb draws ~2 amps while the smaller filament draw ~.5 amps.
The large filament is used for the brake while the small filament is used for the running lighs
Operation:
Reverse light – Obvious
Running lights (aka when headlights are on) side markers are on, top inner is on, small filament in top
outer is on.
Brakes applied: Top outer large filament on, turn & brake light on
Turn signal on: Top outer large filament flashing, turn and brake flashing
If brakes are applied with the running
lights both filaments in the top outer will be on.

This cuts the brake and turn signals to the outer
running light and leaves the amber quadrant
as just a turn signal

Cut the wire at point shown in the previous slide and hard wire it
to the brake pedal as shown.

By cutting the wire the turn signal only affects the amber lens. The downside is that the brake
pedal lights only the bright filament in the upper-outer lens, this makes the brakes harder to see.
It’s a less safe option.

Trick European Tail Light Mod
Add a second 1157 socket and two diodes to further increase brake light intensity
Under Braking, the diode circuit lights BOTH the running light filament AND the brake light
filament. During daylight this increases brake light visibility. At night it has no added benefit.

Operation
When the brakes are applied, D1 allows
current to flow to the running light circuit
so both filaments light.
3-Amp Diodes
Model: 1N5402
Radio Shack
Catalog #: 276-1143
D2
D2 keeps the current from running back
into the running light circuit. Without D2
the side markers will also light up under
braking.

www.superbrightleds.com.
Model Red 1157-RLX3.
These bulbs are a drop in replacement for the
1157 bulb. They’re $24/bulb but that’s cheap if
the quicker turn-on keeps someone from
hitting you. At 70mph each 10th of a second in
reaction time is worth 10 feet of stopping
distance.
