Poetic Devices
Alliteration
• Same beginning sound is repeated over
and over again.
– Example: “Sally sells seashells by the
seashore.”
– (Sometimes called tongue twisters!) 
Rhyme
• Words that have the same ending sounds.
– Example: say, day, way, etc.
• “I went on my way,
Through a bright shining day.”
Onomatopoeia
• These words imitates a sound. (The word
sounds like what it does.)
– Example: swoosh, click, thud
Repetition
• Typically used in poetry, when the poet
will use the same word several times in a
row.
– Example:
“The sun went down, down, down.”
Word Choice
• The poet will use vivid sensory words to
paint a picture.
• Example:
“The fire was blazing, bright, and
vicious.”
