Tools and Weapons of the Inuit
The Inuit use all different kinds of tools and weapons for survival.
The Inuit were very resourceful and used them for hunting, transportation, games, and other things they needed for survival.
The Thule Adaptation
The Thule adaptation to the Arctic was great. Hunters killed huge whales that could feed a small community for a year. They used umiaks to hunt and kill the bowhead whales. They preserved the meat, blubber and baleen. The Inuit houses were clustered in groups. They were deep pits lined with boulders and whalebones. You can visit a Qarmark house in Resolute Bay.
The Harpoon
A harpoon was used to hunt sea mammals like whales, seals and walrus.
This weapon is made out of a blade of bone, stone or iron.
The harpoon head and fore shaft was made of ivory or antler.
Today, they make the harpoon head from metal.
The men hunted animals with their harpoon by kayak in the open water or on foot in the winter and spring.
The Kakivak
The kakivak was used by the Inuit to spear the fish while they were in shallow water.
The Inuit could use the fish to feed their family as a way to survive.
A Bow Drill
A bow drill was used for carving.
The men carved combs, beads, thimbles, holders and bottle shaped needle cases.
Needles looked the same as our needles today, but they were carved of stone.
