DELOS Workshop Series
Objectives

define a research agenda recognising key areas for
DL research and development

provide an international forum in which the main
actors concerned - universities, research centres,
libraries, museums, electronic publishers, the media can present recent results and exchange ideas and
knowhow on the research issues identified

10th DELOS Workshop on
Audio-Visual Digital Libraries

Motivation
The DL of the future will increasingly be multimedial
and multilingual. The collaborative interaction of
image, sound, speech and natural language
understanding technology is needed in order to
successfully populate, segment, index, and search
digital audio-visual collections (such as film, music, or
photo archives,) with satisfactory recall and precision.

10th DELOS Workshop on
Audio-Visual Digital Libraries
Invited talks include:
–
–
–
–
–
The Carnegie Mellon Informedia Digital Library
Exploiting TV archives
Video abstracting
Everything you want to know about MPEG-7
Multilingual Information Access in AudioVisual Digital Libraries
– Copyright and security issues
Russian-British Digital Library Workshop
Moscow, June 16-17, 1999
EU-NSF Collaborative
Working Groups

The aim was to provide the possibility for US and European Union
groups to jointly explore DL-related technical, social and economic
issues, to co-ordinate research, to share research results and to plan
for the future.
 Five working groups were established in key technical areas:
– Interoperability
– Metadata
– Intellectual Property Rights and Economic Issues
– Resource Indexing and Discovery in a Globally Distributed Digital
Library
– Multilingual Information Access

ECDL Conferences
Third European Conference on Research and
Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries
Paris, France, September 22-24, 1999
Co-organized by BNF (Bibliothèque Nationale de France) and
INRIA (Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en
Automatique)
ECDL will be held in Paris at the prestigious location of the
Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Its main objective is to bring
together researchers from multiple disciplines to present their
work on enabling technologies for digital libraries.

ERCIM Technical Reference
Digital Library (ETRDL)
Objectives



to provide a DL service for ERCIM scientists
to participate in the US NCSTRL initiative but to
create a specialised European service
to provide the ERCIM DL group with a test-bed for
experimental activities such as implementation of
new functions or services.

Results of the DELOS
Activities
DELOS has succeeded in:

stimulating the creation of a European Digital
Library community
 establishing strong links with the international DL
community
 arousing awareness of priority DL research
issues
 encouraging the creation and funding of DL
projects
Russian-British Digital Library Workshop
Moscow, June 16-17, 1999
Looking to the Future
Objectives

build on and consolidate the experience of the
DELOS WG
 create a forum that provides the possibility for
interested communities to collaborate with the DL
research world, exchanging new ideas,
experiences, research results
 stimulate scientific and technological
developments and encourage commercial
applications
Russian-British Digital Library Workshop
Moscow, June 16-17, 1999
DELOS Network of Excellence
Proposed Activities

organize forums for discussion of research
issues and presentation of results, e.g. thematic
workshops, ECDL conference series
 promote advanced education in the DL
technologies e.g. summer schools, curriculum
revision, etc.
 stimulate the development of large-scale testbeds and implement procedures for making them
available over Internet
Russian-British Digital Library Workshop
Moscow, June 16-17, 1999
DELOS Network of Excellence
Proposed Activities (cont.)

create a European Forum for Multilingual
Information Retrieval System Evaluation
 create a Standardization Forum to analyse and
disseminate the state of standards development,
e.g. metadata,middleware, information life-cycle
 coordinate International Cooperation in the DL
domain, e.g. through joint collaborative working
groups on key topics
