Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs in the kingdom of
heaven
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they shall be satisfied
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God
Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons
of God
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’
sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
From the Catechism
 The Beatitudes are at the heart of Jesus' preaching. They
take up the promises made to the chosen people since
Abraham. The Beatitudes fulfill the promises by ordering
them no longer merely to the possession of a territory, but
to the Kingdom of heaven (CCC 1716)
 The Beatitudes respond to the natural desire for
happiness. This desire is of divine origin: God has placed it
in the human heart in order to draw man to the One who
alone can fulfill it. (CCC1718)

- Gentiles and Samaritans hated by Jews
 Samaritan proved to be neighbor in need
 Lawyer draws line and perform lowest amount of work;
surprised to hear Samaritan is the neighbor
Good Samaritan
 Robbed man = Adam which represents entire
human race
 Robbers: the evil powers
 Stripped = lost cloak of sanctifying grace
 Beat and left half dead = fallen human nature is
severely wounded
 Samaritan = Jesus
Good Samaritan
 Priest and Levite pass by man= represent worship of God
alone and blind adherence to the law.
 Old Laws are restrictive.
 The Victim (us) needs more than just



JC picks up and brings us to the Inn = the Church
innkeeper = pope
2 coins = symbolic of keys to kingdom given to Peter;
washes him off and wine to drink= Baptism and Eucharist
The Parable of the Sower of the
Seeds
 (Mt 13:1-9, Mk 4:1, Lk 8:4)
 READ Matthew 13:1-9
 THINK What is the message of this parable? What
symbols are present?
 WRITE down the symbolic meaning for the seed and
each type of ground it falls upon.
 SHARE with your group what you wrote. (Star items
that match)
The Parable of the Sower of the Seeds
 Seed = word of God
 Path – doesn’t care to understand
 Rocky ground- accepts with joy/zealous at first but then stop;
rocks impede growth of plant; when life get tough they give
up
 Thorns – caught up in material world; God is stifled
 Good soil- seed is able to grow and cultivate

 Jesus uses parables to reveal attributes of the
Kingdom of Heaven.

2. why wait to separate until harvest
- see which is wheat vs. weeds

The Pearl of Great Price
 (Mt 13:45- 46)
 Kingdom of God calls for
unconditional and total selfsacrifice and commitment
 Pearl/treasure worth more
than everything else
 How can we live this out as
Catholics?
The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant
 (Mt 18: 23-35)
 1st Servant was given forgiveness and pity;
however did not do the same to his servant
 Lord of 1st servant acted justly because 1st
servant didn’t show mercy
 If we don’t show mercy to others; God won’t
show mercy to us
 We should continuously forgive others; “as
many as seventy-seven times”
77 times
So….
God only wants us to forgive 77 times. If someone
offends you a 78th time you do not have to forgive
them?...
What does 7 symbolize?
What is Jesus really saying?

to him.

 identifies sin and gives true contrition
 “met father and had compassion”
- Father was watching and waiting for son
- father meets half-way
-means father took initiative to forgive  same
as God’s attitude for us and embraced son
Prodigal Son
 Received 3 items

for what was right in the sight of God or man

Reconciliation with the Church is inseparable from
reconciliation with God. (CCC 1445)
 Transubstantiation = the substance of bread and wine
are changed into the substance body and blood of
Christ at the consecration at Mass
 Accidents are things which can be perceived through
the human senses.
 Substances give an object its true identity and
formed its relationship to the world.
 Eucharist:
 accidents = bread and wine, it still looks and tastes the
same
substance = actual body and blood of Christ
Bread of Life Discourse




John 6:22-71; text page 374-375
Most important teaching of Christ!
Preached to crowd in synagogue in Capernaum
Literal and allegorical  points to Eucharist at Last Supper

What spiritual bread was given to the Israelites
in the Old Testament?

Who is the bread of life?

How many times did Christ say he was the
“bread of life”, “living bread”?

What is the reward for having the bread of life?

Which apostle professed Christ as the “Holy
One of God”?
CCC 1407: “The Eucharist is the
heart and summit of the Church’s
life, for in it Christ associates his
Church and all her members with
his sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving offered once for all on
the cross to his Father; by this
sacrifice he pours out the graces of
salvation on his Body which is the
Church.”
 Eucharist is composed of Christ’s Body,
blood, soul, and divinity
– we receive Christ’s glorified body,
divine flesh, we receive a share in
Christ’s divinity
