Resilience Defined
– The capacity to spring back, rebound, successfully adapt in
the face of adversity, and develop social, academic, and
vocational competence despite exposure to severe stress or
simply the stress that is inherent in today’s world. (Nan
Henderson)
– The capacity to rise above adversity and to forge lasting
strengths in the struggle. It is the means by which
children/adults can rebound from hardship and emerge as
strong, healthy individuals, able to lead gratifying lives, albeit
with some scars to show for their experiences. (Stephen and
Sybil Wolin)

Core Principles
• Young people need to feel valued. When we see them as the
experts on their own lives, youth learn to believe their opinions
matter.
• Youth are often the best teachers and role models for other young
people.

Core Principles
• Most behaviors we fear serve as coping strategies that help youth
manage uncomfortable stressors. If we help them (starting at very
young ages) develop alternative coping strategies, we will diminish
their need to turn to worrisome quick fixes.
• Youth watch adult behaviors closely and how we model adaptive
strategies to stress matters.
