     Successful completion of regionwide project in NHS Employability (over 1190 economically inactive people trained to ‘job ready status’) Successful completion of a Local NHS Procurement Project including local food suppliers and local waste management Establishment of a multi-disciplinary NHS Carbon Reduction Steering Group involving ‘Carbon Action Yorkshire’ establishing cross organisational working groups exploring and sharing developing good practice in energy utilisation, transport, procurement and waste management Identification of senior carbon reduction ‘leads’ in over 90% of NHS organisations in the region Leading on the piloting of ‘The NHS Forest’

     Establishing links between NHS, Local Authorities and other partners to form action groups for SD Incorporating SD into the Commissioning Framework and the World Class Commissioning process.

“Green Clinical Area” - Pilot using the Addenbrookes Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Commitment from the EoE NHS Management Board that trusts will  Establish board level champions for SD  Use the GCC model  Develop SD action plans in conjunction with their LA Health into PSA 27 (Climate Change) Delivery Team at GO-East

West Midlands

     West Midlands NHS as a Good Corporate Citizen Network in place since July 2006 Director level membership from the majority of NHS Trusts in the region & some PCT and wider members. Workshops held on Waste, Energy, Transport, Employment & Skills, Procurement, Legislation and BREEAM Healthcare (amongst others) Excellence in Public Health Conference 2007: SD & the role of the NHS & 2 FTs in West Midlands nominated for HSJ GCC award in 2008.

Focused events on Waste Management in 2007 with Environment Agency and NISP (National Industrial Symbiosis Programme) SHA Chair has put SD element into objectives of each NHS chair

      London NHS Travel Plan Network - promotes the development and uptake of travel plans among NHS Trusts across London. London Environmental Network – meets twice a year, disseminating environmental guidance and legistalion, networking opportunities for NHS environmental managers Sustainable Employment Initiative - introduced at Barts and the London NHS Trust and Tower Hamlets PCT London Procurement Project – Collaborative waste contract launched Climate Change Adaption Strategy – ongoing relationship with the Mayor’s office and LDA Healthy Urban Development Unit in London – working with PCTs, promoting health improvement and narrowing health inequalities

     East and Coastal Kent PCT; Environmental Impact Assessment of Trust Activities Darneth Valley Hospital; Green Travel Policy including mini bus for staff transport West Kent and West Sussex PCTs; Sustainability committees introducing organisational wide change Medway Trust; annual Environment Week, CIBSE Best Carbon Performance Award 2008, CHP unit to reduce CO2 footprint by 3,000 tonnes pa. Regional mapping process of sustainable development activity across Region in collaboration with Campaign for Greener Healthcare

     Oxford Cancer Centre- Winner of prestigious low carbon award and is reported to be the UK’s most energy efficient health building Milton Keynes PCT -New Ashfield medical centre generates 20% of own energy South Central SHA awareness raising- roadshows / presentations / electronic newsletter Southampton University Hospitals Trust- Reduction of clinical waste and increase in recycling Portsmouth City PCT- Integrated travel plan using local strategic partnership

South West

    South West SHA: Creation of a Sustainable Development network coordinator, hosted by the regions leading experts Sustainability South West.

South West SHA: Urban field trip to Freiburg in Germany to learn from the realities of progress towards healthy communities and sustainable settlements.

North Bristol NHS Trust: 'Treading Lightly Environmental Campaign‘ aimed at staff that is already achieving results such as a 350% increase in recycling over the past 12 months.

Cornwall Food Programme. Procuring food supplies in a sustainable manner in order to support local suppliers, growers and producers. In this way the Trusts are encouraging the local economy whilst reducing food miles and waste from packaging.
