VOLCANOES
THE
ASSESSMENT!!
Hola.
I am Jose Cruz. I
live in Mont Isle, a
beautiful island in
the Caribbean,
where I am Mayor
of the city of
Iguana Cay.
We are planning a major celebration
here in Mont Isle to be held in three
months. We love to party and we
hope you can join us.
Here are some pictures of the island.
One of the most beautiful sights on our island
is the 1000 metre high mountain of Poco-poco.
Unfortunately, Poco-poco is a volcano
although no one in the island can
remember any volcanic activity.
As Mayor of Iguana Cay however I am
worried that the presence of the
volcano might stop people coming to
our celebrations.
(There has recently been volcanic
activity on a nearby island which has
been well documented in the world
media.)
I need your help!
I need an expert volcanologist to
prepare a report on volcanoes so
that I, as Mayor, can reassure any
worried tourists. I am also planning
a conference for the tourist
companies and the local and
international press.
You will find a detailed break down
of the information you need to
cover in a recently posted letter
which begins,

The letter also suggests sources of
information you could use to help.
We are a poor
country and
therefore I am
sure you realise
how important
it is for us to
attract tourists
to one of Mont
Isle’s biggest
carnivals ever.
