Key Stage 2 Assessments 2013
• Children will be assessed in Reading, Writing, Maths and Science by
the end of Year 6 – Statutory
• Every child awarded a level in each of these areas (no longer an
overall English level)
• Levels formulated in different ways
• Every child given a certificate with levels on and this information
passed to secondary schools, shared with local authority, school
league tables etc
• Level 4 is national expectation
• Level 5 is above national average
• Lots of changes to assessment systems recently
Science
• Teacher assessment – based on work over year and practice SATs
papers marked internally
• No external Science SATs paper this year
• Biennial (every other year), pupil-level sampling system will be
introduced in 2014

Maths
• Every child to sit Level 3-5 SATs Maths
tests:
• Mental Maths test (20 mins)
• Written Paper A (45 mins, no calculator)
• Written Paper B (45 mins, calculator)
• Externally marked and levelled

Reading
• Every child to sit Level 3-5 SATs Reading
Test
• 15 mins to read booklet
• 45 mins to answer comprehension
questions
• Externally marked and levelled

Writing
• No longer an externally marked Writing SATs Test
• Teacher Assessment for writing composition – evidence over
the year
• New Punctuation, Grammar and Spelling National
Level 3-5 test – marked externally
• New test will assess children’s abilities in the following
technical aspects of English:
- grammar;
- punctuation;
- spelling;
- vocabulary; and
- handwriting (subject to final decisions following the results
of the technical pre-test).

Level 6
• Schools now have option to enter some
children for Level 6 tests
• Level 6 tests to be taken in addition to
Level 3-5 test on same day
• School’s decision on who sits test
• Must achieve a level 5 in Level 3-5 test
• Must then reach pass mark in Level 6 test
• Should be seen as an exception, pupils not
expected to achieve a level 6 at Primary
School
• Level 6 expected to be achieved at 14 years
of age!

How can you support your child this year?
• Ensure every piece of homework is completed to a high
standard
• Encourage children to do a little extra regularly to push
themselves on
• Revision books will be given to children later in the year,
please make sure they are used
• Parent workshops should help you in how to support
Reading, Writing and Maths at home:
Supporting Reading and Writing at Home – Wednesday,
21st November, 7pm
Supporting Maths at Home – date to be confirmed
• Attend parents evening
• Correct spoken language
• Read, read, read
• Encourage children to become independent learners –
take responsibility for their learning
• Not all about SATs, try to relieve pressure!
