Our Goals and Expectations
Learn all the information that I can about the C ommon C ore S tate S tandards. ( CCSS )
Learn about S tandards for M athematical P ractice. ( SMP )
Learn about S tandards for M athematical C ontent. ( SMC )

A Few Things to Start With!
Cell Phones Off Please Be an Active Participant!
This is your workshop not mine!
Let’s start with a quick introduction and warm welcome.
4
Ice Breaker Activity
On the back of your agenda …………..
Write 4 simple statements about yourself. Make 3 of them true and 1 of them false in random order.
Don’t make the statements too complicated.
Keep these hidden please.
In a couple of minutes we will have some fun.
5
Bob’s 4 Statements
See if you can pick the false statement from the below list!
I ride a Harley motorcycle for fun.
I’m a graduate of Notre Dame.
I played on my high school basketball team.
I have taught elementary school.
6
Essential Questions to Ponder!
How stressed-out should I be about the CCSS? (Common Core State Standards) Who is going to design the assessments?
What caused the CCSS?
When are they (CCSS) going to impact me and the kids?
Where can I find resources to help?

See Next Slide
Get “3” sheets of flip chart paper. Place your group number at the top of each page.
Label each sheet as Grade 6 , Grade 7 , Grade 8 On each grade level sheet, place the standard code……i.e., 6.EE. 1 Summary each standard in your own words .
If possible give an example to help explain the standard.
Old stuff, new stuff, I’m too sure stuff
6.EE.1
Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.
Example of Flip Charts
16
6.EE.1
Group 2-Grade 6
Write and evaluate expressions with exponents.
Example: Write an expression for these words; Four more than the square of a number.
Example: Evaluate 7 + 3 4 – 16 Old Stuff??: “Evaluate” is covered in IAS 6.5.5 (Area of Circle) ………Actually done in grade 7.1.4 NEW Stuff “ Write” is void in IAS grade 6….Actually 7.1.1 & 7.3.1

Standards Mathematical Practices (SMP)
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others .
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

SMP 7 and SMP 8
SMP 7: Look for Structure
(10 + 2)
Distributive Prop; 25(12) = 25(10) + 25(2)= 250 + 50 = 300 Addition Property of Equality; x – 6 = 30 x – 6 + 6 = 30 + 6 (x + 2) 2 = (x + 2)(x + 2) because of exponent 2
SMP 8
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning 21
(x – 1)(x + 1) = x 2 + 1x – 1x – 1 2 = x 2 – 1 After Repeated Examples Similar to the above……….
(x – 5)(x + 5) = x 2 - 25 ---------------------------------- Irrational and Rational Numbers ??

Rationale Behind CCSS
28
NCLB
has some holes in this federal legislation.
Equity issue from state to state.
Funding problems.
Special needs students and ELL students.
States were mandated to make substantial educational changes on their own.
States can no longer set educational standards and expectations independently!
We need to better-prepare our students for the future.

How is this stuff ( CCSS ) going to roll-in?
35 School Year 2011-12 CCSS (Common Core State Standards)
Kindergarten will implement the CCSS first.
All other grades will teach the IAS (Indiana A cademic S tandards) and sample a few CCSS at grade level.
ISTEP+ Testing and ECA Testing will measure only IAS.
36
“Transition” CCSS for School Year 2011-12
Indiana Academic Standards (IAS) classified as “classroom assessed” or “ISTEP+ assessed.” CCSS to be taught school year 2011 12…..a transition to school year 2014-15.

1. Understand the concept of a unit rate
$5 per hamburger.”
(
CCSS 6.RP.2
)
a/b associated with a ratio a:b
with
Note: this is an extension of IAS 6.2.6. b ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. For example, “This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar.” “We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of
2. Solve unit rate problems including those involving unit pricing and constant speed.
For example, if it took 7 hours to mow 4 lawns, then at that rate, how many lawns could be mowed in 35 hours? At what rate were lawns being mowed?
(
CCSS 6.RP.3b
) 3. Solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent. (
CCSS 6.RP.3c
)
Note: This extends IAS 6.2.8.
4. Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities. (
CCSS 6.RP.3d
)
39 School Year 2012-13 CCSS (Common Core State Standards)
Kindergarten will implement the CCSS for the second year and grade 1 for the first year.
All other grades will teach the IAS (Indiana A cademic S tandards) and sample a few CCSS at grade level.
ISTEP+ Testing and ECA Testing will measure IAS and pilot specific CCSS items.
40 School Year 2013-14 (Common Core State Standards)
Kindergarten will implement the CCSS for the third year, grade 1 for the second year, and grade 2 for the first year.
All other grades will teach the IAS (Indiana A cademic S tandards) and sample a few CCSS at grade level.
ISTEP+ Testing and ECA Testing will measure IAS and pilot specific CCSS items.
School Year 2014-15 (Common Core State Standards) 41
CCSS fully implemented at this time.
New PARCC Assessments ( P artnership for A ssessment of R eadiness for C ollege and C areers) will be administered at grades 3-HS)
These PARCC assessments will be done on computers.
Probably three or four times during the year.
New cut-scores from the input of 25 states.
