 An
annotated bibliography is a single or list
of citations to books, articles, and
documents. Each citation is followed by a
brief (usually about 200 words) descriptive
and evaluative paragraph, the annotation.
The purpose of the annotation is to inform
the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and
quality of the sources cited.

Summary: Some annotations merely summarize the source. What are the main
arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If
someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say? The length of
your annotations will determine how detailed your summary is.

Assess: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful
source? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the
information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this
source?

Reflect: Once you've summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits
into your research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your
argument? How can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how
you think about your topic?
Generally, an annotated bibliography consists of
each of these components.
I
have provided you an example of an
annotated bibliography for an article (Collard
et al., 2008) on mindfullness.
 On
the next slide you will see the format for
an annotated bibliography for this class.
 Your
annotated bibliographies may not be as
detail as mine, but this is your first
experience and I am confident they will get
better as you grow.

SAMPLE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
Collard, P., Avny, N., & Boniwell, I. (2008). Teaching mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) to
students: The effects of MBCT on the levels of mindfulness and subjective well-being. Counselling
Psychology Quarterly, 21(4), 323-336.

directly into your reference section.
Collard, Avny, and Boniwell wanted to investigate mindfulness’ mediation on MBCT and MBSR
and the link between mindfulness and constructs associated with subjective well-being (SWB). The
authors examined the impact of MBCT training on these SWB constructs utilizing predominant
measures of mindfulness (FMI) and SWB (PANAS and SWLS). Results of this study indicated a
relationship between MBCT training and a decrease in negative affect and an increase in satisfaction
with life. Mindfulness training had no impact on reported levels of positive affect. The authors
contended this was support of their initial four hypotheses. One concern of this research is the
authors’ assertion that mindfulness mediates MBCT and MBSR. They make this assertion, yet do not
offer support of this claim. Mediation is typically measured through the three-step process
recommended by Baron and Kenny (1986). No support for this assertion is given. Additionally,
participants in this study were graduate students in counseling. This population has training in basic
counseling skills, which include self-awareness, and could result in skewed outcomes of mindfulness
training ‘s influence on subjective well-being. Finally, the generalizability of these results to either
clinical populations or the general public cannot be assumed. Too many mediating or moderating
factors, such as physiology and cognitive capacity, cultural acceptance of mindfulness practices, and
investment in the program would influence the relationship between mindfulness and SWB.
 The
assignment for your class is to model this
sample and submit your first annotated
bibliography on an empirical article to me by
Friday via Google Docs.
