the ways that technology is being
used by the principal and her faculty.

Integration is…
• It’s about reflecting on our practice.
• It’s about solutions to problems (PortaPortal)
• It’s about meeting needs.
Two Stories About Blogs:

It’s also about objectives, appropriate activities and aligned
assessment.

Technology and the Curriculum
• Learning from (technology provides curriculum:
drill & practice, integrated learning systems,
textbook enhancements)
• Learning about (technology as curriculum:
“computer” lab or class, programming, skills
taught in context)
• Learning with (technology supports curriculum:
the GOLD standard)

Technical Support
What do your teachers need in order to
integrate technology effectively?
How Do You Evaluate Now?
• Take a minute to list the things you might
look for when you observe teachers.
• Two Scenarios: Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones
Things to Consider
• Who is using technology: teacher/students/both
• When is technology being used:
before/during/after instruction
• How is technology being used: research,
organization, analysis, presentation
• What kind of technology is being used?
• Where is technology being used: classroom, lab,
media center, other?
• The most important question: WHY?
“Technology will not have a
significant impact on student
learning until teachers change the
way they teach.”
Larry Cuban, 1986
ACOT Research Question
“What happens to students and
teachers when they have access to
technology whenever they need it.”*
*Changing the Conversation about Teaching Learning and Technology: A Report on 10 years of
ACOT Research
http://www.apple.com/education/k12/leadership/acot/library.html
ACOT Research Findings
• Teachers pass through phases on a continuum
as they learn to integrate technology.
• Research is starting to show that how quickly
you pass through the stages depends on your
educational philosophy.
• Remember, it was a TEN year study.
ACOT Stages
Entry
Teacher is learning the basics of a technology, e.g., how to set
up equipment and operate it.
Adoption
Teacher begins to use the technology in management areas,
e.g., computer generated quizzes or worksheets,
gradebooks.
Adaptation
Teacher begins to use software to support instruction, e.g., a
commercially produced content area program or
productivity tools (word processor, data base)
Appropriation
Teacher begins to focus on collaborative, project-based
technology use and technology becomes one of several
instructional tools.
Invention
Teacher begins to develop different uses for technology, e.g.,
creates projects that combine two or more technologies.

Knowledge Work
“Giving and receiving instruction is
preparation for knowledge work. Knowledge
work begins when the student does something
with the information received and in the
process makes the information his or her
own.” (Schlechty, 77)
Some teachers treat all objectives as recall…

Ideas…
• Give teachers time…and a specific goal
– Developing strategies/finding resources for
integrating technology into their current classes
– Developing units that take advantage of
technology’s unique characteristics
• Focus on scaffolding
– Webquests
– Microsoft templates
– Lesson plan websites like MarcoPolo
