POST SIXTH FORM
• It is exciting and a measure of our success that the overwhelming majority
of our students choose to go to university at the end of their A Level or
Level 3 BTEC course.
• All of the year group who wanted to go to University last summer were
successful in securing their places at University. The majority of students
secured places at Universities of their choice including Southampton,
Kings College London and Queen Mary to name a few.
• Those students who do not wish to go to university are given excellent
guidance and support regarding their next step by the school.
OFSTED 2014
“Provision in the Sixth Form provides appropriate
learning pathways for students to go on to further
education and employment.”
MAKING YOUR POST-16
SUBJECT CHOICES
Three reasons you may want to continue to study a subject at a
higher level are:
1. You have been good at and have enjoyed the subject in the
past.
2. You need this subject to enter a particular career or course.
3. You have not studied the subject before but have looked into it
and think it will suit your strengths.
FURTHER CONSIDERATIONS
SHOULD BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT
1. Subjects are distinctly more difficult at an advanced level than
at GCSE
2. Make sure you have got your facts straight. There are many
misconceptions about subjects required for courses and
careers. Look at the UCAS website.
3. Don’t take uninformed risks. What is the new subject actually
about?
4. Does your performance match your ambition?
FACILITATING SUBJECTS
Although they may not be specified as required subjects, many successful
applicants to competitive universities have advanced level qualifications in
at least two of the facilitating subjects. These are:
1. Mathematics and Further Mathematics
2. English ( Literature)
3. Physics
4. Biology
5. Chemistry
6. Geography
7. History
8. Languages ( Classical or Modern)
THE FIVE POINT PLAN FOR
MAKING YOUR POST-16 CHOICES
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Know what you want to study? Check the entry requirements.
Not sure yet? – Keep your options open.
GCSEs and other standard level qualifications matter…
Think balance.
Make sure you know WHY?
OFSTED 2014

Sixth Form”
