AUTHENTIC LEADERS AND
CONTINUOUS LEARNING
CONSTANTLY ASK YOURSELF
–
–
–
–
–
What is being said?
What does it mean to me?
How can I use this to be better?
Make informed choices and and decisions
Use every available opportunity to influence and be
influenced by others
– CONTINUOUS SELF-EMPOWERMENT: “to have a
sense of strength and personal control within ….
Taking full responsibility for your life and no longer
blaming others, or circumstances for your situation.”
(Dr Linda Friedman – SELF)
PERSONAL EFECTIVENESS
HOW DO WE BECOME AUTHENTIC
LEADERS?
– We need to constantly re-examine our effectiveness
on a personal and professional basis to see how it
can be enhanced
– We need to eliminate self-defeating behaviour in all
areas of our lives – at home and at work
– The best way to improve our organizations is to
improve ourselves
– The best way to empower our organizations is to
empower ourselves
AUTHENTIC LEADERS AND THE POWER
OF INDEPENDENT WILL
Independent will makes effective selfmanagement possible
This is measured by our personal integrity
– The quality of being honest and morally
upright
– Our ability to make and keep commitments to
ourselves, to “walk the talk”
– It is honour with self which leads to honour
with others
ACHIEVING PERSONAL SUCCESS
Excellence must be a way of life
Batho pele: Service delivery in whatever sphere we
operate in
Make a commitment to brighten the corner where you
are
I shall pass this way but once – make a difference
Women’s role in transformation is critical – women who
marched to the Union Buildings in protest during the very
dark days of apartheid
Gifts and callings are given to us according to our
abilities
Immortalise your name – leave a legacy
7 HABITS OF AUTHENTIC LEADERS
Dr Stephen R Covey
– Recognized as one of Time magazines 25
most influential Americans
– His book “Seven Habits of Highly Effective
People” sold 15 million copies
– Attended first course in 1996 and have
applied his principles since then
HABIT 1
BE PRO ACTIVE
– I take responsibility for my attitude and
actions
– I am a product of my values and decisions
– I am not a victim of my moods and
circumstances
– In every situation I have the opportunity to
choose how I will respond
– I have a response-ability to make things
happen
HABIT 1 (Cont.)
Lord, grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change
The courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference
HABIT 2
BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND
What is the centre of my life – spouse,
family, possessions, work, money, church,
sport, friends, etc
Do these centres give me a sense of selfworth all the time
Do I frequently put aside family, etc,
assuming that everyone will understand
that earning money comes first
HABIT 2 (Cont.)
At the end of my life, what do I want to
have accomplished
Write a personal mission statement
My Personal Mission Statement
Written in March 1996
“To Live, to Love, to Leave a Legacy”
To live in harmony with all mankind
To influence those around me in a positive way
To appreciate life exactly as it is
To build my Christian values to the fullest
To be a positive role model to younger people
To lift myself when I fall and continue on life’s journey
To appreciate the good that is inherent in all God’s children
To express my feelings in a positive and constructive way
To use very opportunity to utilise my talents and abilities
To curb my tongue when something sharp is pushing to escape from it
To always remember where I came from by giving a helping hand to those who are
less fortunate than I am
To be a pleasant and happy old person
To die peacefully knowing that my being in this world has made a little difference to
someone’s life – then I will lived, loved and left a legacy
ANGIE MAKWETLA
HABIT 2 (Cont.)
We need to identify our values and goals –
if you don’t know where you are going, you
cannot make informed decisions
Identify the different roles in your life and
write one or two goals for each role
What do you want from life
What do you value
What are your gifts and talents
HABIT 2 (Cont.)
Work on your goals each day
Accept that you cannot achieve your goals
in every role every day or every week
Prioritise
Be the change that you want
Be the leader that you want
HABIT 3
PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST
Having decided what is important in my
life, I make sure that those people and
things are not sidelined by what seems
urgent, or by other people’s agendas
We reap what we sow
Cannot sow potatoes and reap tomatoes
There are things that are urgent, but not
important
HABIT 3 (Cont.)
Some things are important but not urgent
That is why goals are important to help us
identify what is important in our lives
Important things are those that contribute
to our mission, our values, our goals
They require us to be pro-active, to plan
ahead and be ready to seize opportunities
Through doing them consistently we will
produce desired results
HABIT 3 (Cont.)
If we keep doing what we are doing, we will keep
getting what we are getting
Effective personal management means
– Dealing with things that are important but not urgent
– Eg, building relationships, writing a personal mission
statement, doing long term planning, sharpening the
saw (reading, going to gym, etc)
– Long term maintenance
– These are all things that we know we need to do, but
seldom get around to doing, because they are not
urgent
HABIT 4
THINK WIN WIN
I learn to cooperate with others in a way that
builds trust, ensures our mutual benefit, success
and effectiveness, and allows everyone to be a
winner
What makes us not to acknowledge the potential
in others and affirm their unique gifts?
What makes us not to affirm others unique gifts,
encourage their individual potential and to want
the best for them?
What makes us not be able to love
unconditionally?
HABIT 4 (Cont.)
Is it an insecurity in ourselves which prevents us
from cooperating with others, from being
prepared to combine our talents and share the
credit for the greater benefit of all?
Win win is a way of thinking that regards
relationships as more important than issues
Most of life is not a competition
We don’t have to live each day competing with
our spouse, our children, our colleagues, our
neighbours or our friends
HABIT 4 (Cont.)
“Who is winning in your marriage” is a ridiculous
question
If both people in a relationship are not winning, then both
are losing
As a pro active person, you can choose your responses
and rise above your win/lose conditioning
Consider ongoing relationships and the building of trust
as more important than issues
Stay in communication and seek a better way, a more
generous way
Replace meanness with generosity of spirit
HABIT 5
SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN
TO BE UNDERSTOOD
I learn to listen, with genuine intent to
understand what matters to the other
person, before expecting him or her to
listen to me
HABIT 5 (Cont.)
When we are truly interested in what
another person is saying, 3 important
things happen
– We give them a sense of self-worth
– Trust is built up
– We can decide what to do on the basis of
knowledge rather than assumption or
ignorance
HABIT 5 (Cont.)
WHAT PREVENTS US FROM LISTENING
WITH EMPATHY?
–
–
–
–
–
–
–
Desire to be appreciated for offering a wise solution
Impatience
Need to defend my position
Feeling of superiority
Assume that I know what you are going to say
Been there, done that – let me tell you about me
Thinking of my reply
Habit 5 (Cont.)
Seek first to understand is a correct principle
It is practiced by effective doctors, lawyers,
executives, managers, parents, students and
many others whose success depends on first
understanding symptoms, instructions, etc
Once you have proved that you understand the
other person in depth, he or she will be more
willing to listen to you
When both parties understand both
perspectives, we find ourselves on the same
side looking for solutions together
HABIT 5(Cont.)
Lord make me an instrument of your peace
Where there is hatred, let me sow love
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is discord, union
Where there is doubt, faith
Where there is darkness, light
Where there is sadness, joy
Lord, grant that we may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console
To be understood as to understand
To be loved as to love
For it is in giving that we receive
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
HABIT 6
SYNERGISE
I learn that by working together we can achieve far more
than either one of us could achieve on our own
1 + 1 = 3 or more
The combined actions of a group of bodily organs
Each part of our bodies fulfils a particular function
Our health and well being depends on all the parts
combining in their different strengths and weaknesses
Consider the peaceful transition of SA to a democracy –
it is called a miracle
Synergy is the essence of miracles
HABIT 6 (Cont.)
Through mutual cooperation and teamwork we
can accomplish what would otherwise be
impossible
Create shared mission statements
– Within my circle of influence I will share the
responsibility for the economic well-being and quality
of life for everyone
– By example, create a culture of learning and
productivity; accountability and the effective use of
resources; develop high trust levels and synergy
HABIT 7
SHARPEN THE SAW
SPIRITUAL GROWTH
– Pray
– Listen
– Keep silent
– Read the bible and other spiritual books
– Dream dreams and envision
– Give thanks
HABIT 7 (Cont.)
PHYSICAL HEALTH
– Balanced diet
– Exercise
– Get sufficient sleep and rest
MENTAL ALERTNESS
– Continue learning
– Read
– Write
– Think
HABIT 7 (Cont.)
RELATIONSHIPS – EMOTIONAL
DEPOSITS
– Keep promises
– Honour commitments
– Apologise
– Be loyal
– Be kind and caring
– Be generous
– Give time and credit
CONCLUSION
We are responsible for our own destiny
Take responsibility for your own success
Empower those below you
Live, love, leave a legacy
BECOME AN AUTHENTIC LEADER
THANK YOU
