“To Whom is the Arm of
Yahweh Revealed”
Isaiah 53
A Song of the Suffering Servant
Mistakenly applied to Israel by
some Jews of today
The most well known passage of
the Old Testament
Isaiah 53
• The Prophecy begins at verse 13 of Chapter 52
• His glory is revealed in its opening Declarations
• The Atonement is clearly defined, including both
aspects of sin
• The Work of our Saviour is Beautifully Revealed
Behold My Servant - Isaiah 52:13
• “Servant” – A title of Messiah - Isaiah 42:1; 49:6;
Ezekiel 34:23. This verse is echoed in
Philippians 2:5-11.
• Deal Prudently – “Prosper” by Rotherham. The
Kingdom inferred – Jeremiah 23:5
• Hebrew “Sakal” wise in Daniel 12:3, 10.
Knowledge caused him to prosper, 53:10-11.
“As Many”
The Suffering and Glory Compared
• Verse 14 – The Suffering was great. He was
despised and rejected – Psalm 22:6-7
• Verse 15 – The Glory will be great. He endured
much, and will be glorified much – Isaiah 49:6-7;
51:5
• Verse 15 - Quoted in Romans 15:21 in relation to
the gospels belief amongst the gentiles. Which
adds to the meaning of 53:1!
“Who hath Believed”
• Many of the Gentiles did - 52:15
• But Israel rejected him – John 12:37-38; Romans
10:16
• “Our Report” – “Doctrine” in Isaiah 28:9
– Israel was looking or a Messiah, but would not
believe Messiah’s doctrine – John 7:16-17, 45-48
• The Report of Suffering – 1 Peter 1:10-11
“The Arm of Yahweh”
• Yahshua was Yahweh’s arm – John 1:14
– His hand did the Fathers work – v.10
• His arm could have saved them – Isaiah 59:1;
Romans 1:16
• “Revealed” – Hebrew “Galah” – denude in
disgrace, to exile. When Yahweh does this, it is
for judgment – cp. 52:10. Isaiah 5:13
“A Tender Plant”
• “Before Him” – Only His Father truly Knew him
– 1 Peter 2:4; Matthew 3:17
• “Tender Plant” – “Yoneq”, a twig, sucker, a
sapling. Similar descriptions in Isaiah 11:1-3;
Jeremiah 23:5; Zech 6:12
• A sapling denotes his humble origin – Mark 6:3;
Romans 8:3; Philippians 2:6-7
“Out of a Dry Ground”
• Israel was devoid of Truth – Psalm 63:1;
Jeremiah 2:13; Amos 8:11
• This was an unnatural result – Isaiah 49:1-2.
Yahshua overcame that which was natural –
Hebrews 4:15
• WE also must overcome that which is natural to
inherit the Kingdom of Yahweh – John 15:16
Messiah’s Beauty
• Rotherham – “He had neither beauty nor
majesty,—When we beheld him, there was
nothing to behold, that we should desire him”
• Israel did not desire him – But there was a beauty
to desire in his righteousness and character – 2
Timothy 4:8; John 6:66-68
“A Man of Sorrows”
• He was despised and rejected - Psalm 69:19-20,
29.; John 1:10-11
• Hebrews 4:15 – Our grief and sorrow is the
nature bear and the sin that comes there from
• We should be men and women of sorrows as well
– Philippians 3:8-10; 1 Peter 4:13
• What do we esteem? - Hebrews 11:26
“He hath Borne our Griefs”
• NASB – ‘Surely our griefs he himself bore” –
Romans 8:3; Hebrews 2:14-16
• Matthew shows that sickness is inferred –
Matthew 8:17
• How has our sickness been borne – Isaiah 33:24;
Psalm 103:3
• Sickness and sin – Deuteronomy 28:21-22, 28
“Wounded for our Transgressions”
• “Chalah”, to pierce – by thorns, by nails, by
spear.
• Transgressions is “Pesha”, moral revolt, rebellion
• Iniquities is “Avon”, moral perversity, thus
applicable to only ourselves – Romans 3:24-26,
4:25
“The Chastisement that
made us whole”
• “Of our peace” – Shalom, RSV “made us whole”
the idea is to be of ONE.
• True oneness with the Father starts with being in
the Son, and develops as we learn of him and
develop a character that reflects his own –
Ephesians 2:12-17; Colossians 1:20-21; Hebrews
13:20
“With His Stripes We are Healed”
• Quoted in 1 Peter 2:24
• How was our sin in his body? Cp. V6 “Laid on him the
iniquity of us all” – 2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 8:3, Hebrews
2:14-16
• Peter says we “should live unto righteousness”, showing that
both death and life are necessary for salvation, they are
dependant one on another – Romans 6:1-4. “It is not enough
merely to die unto sin, there is a need to build into our lives a
Divine likeness”
“With His Stripes We are Healed”
• “Stripes “Chabburah” – a weal, blueness, Proverbs
20:30, Matthew 27:26
• His blueness was only efficacious because His character
was perfect - Numbers 15:38-39 cp. With Matthew
9:20-22
• Our healing dependant on our faith and action, do we
reach out for righteousness? – 1 Peter 2:25. Our healing
began with baptism, but is completed at immortality,
Philippians 3:21
“A Lamb to the Slaughter”
• The Lamb of God – John 1:29; 1 Peter 1:18-19;
1 Corinthians 5:7
• Why the Lamb and not the Shepherd? – The symbol
connects him to his brethren – Hebrews 2:14-16
• Slaughter – cp. “Cut off” from v8. Daniel 9:26
“covenanted” A violent Death predicted, a natural
death not acceptable. 1 Corinthians 15:23-24; Genesis
3:15
“By Oppression and Judgment
he was taken away”
• Oppression – Psalm 22:12-21; Matthew 27:31
• “Declare his Generation” – Psalm 22:30
• Rotherham – “And of his age, who considered that he
was cut off out of the land of the living for my peoples
transgression”? Cp. Luke 19:41-42
• “Stricken” – Hebrew, “Negah” Leperous, cp. Leviticus
13:2, ct. v4 – The people wrongly thought him a sinner,
but Yahweh did smite him with “Negah” (2 Corinthians
5:21)
His Grave
“His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He
was with a rich man in His death, Because He
had done no violence, Nor was there any
deceit in His mouth” NASB
Literally fulfilled, Matthew 27:57-60
Yahweh’s Purpose with Messiah
• “Pleased” – Rotherham, “Yet Yahweh purposed”
– John 10:18
• “Bruise” – “Daka”, to crush or humble
• “Grief” – Khala”, to be weak, sick, or afflicted”
• Rotherham – “to bruise him, He laid on him
sickness”. CJB – “to crush him with illness”. Cp.
Galatians 3:13; 4:4
His Soul an Offering for Sin
• “He shall see His seed” – A Numerous offspring
was a great blessing in the eyes of Hebrews,
Proverbs 17:6; Psalm 128:6; Psalm 22:30-31
• Again a result that runs counter to “nature” as he
had no literal seed – Cp. John 3:3; 1 Corinthians
4:15
• “Prolong His Days” – Psalm 72:17, 21:1-7
“The Travail of His Soul”
• In Foresight, Hebrews 12:2.
• And in reality, “he shall see the fruit of the travail
of his soul and be satisfied”, RSV – Revelation
5:9-10, John 16:20-22.
• The symbol of travail and birth is significant,
Isaiah 26:17-19, 66:5-12
“A Portion with the Great”
Cp. “Many in verse 11 & 12
The Kingdom foretold – 54:1-5
This Glory the result of 2 things.
1 – He overcame – “bare the sin of the great”
2 – He redeemed the Great – He “made
intercession for the transgressors”
