Intellectual Property (IP):
Why do we need it?
1
4
2
3
• Many patents exist and are being filed today in areas
relevant to requirements, process, and specifications
• Companies could hold patents on aspects of the process
that later deter implementation
• It is GS1’s role to protect the GS1
community and its investment in
development and implementation
to the best of its ability

Intellectual Property (IP):
How do we address it within GS1?
1
4
2
3
• Develop and administer an IP Policy (must opt in)
• Allow for sharing of work-in-progress only with
companies that have opted in to specific
SMG/WG (including GS1 MOs)
• Allow only those that have signed
the IP and Opt-In Agreements to
participate in GS1 SMG/WG
