Maximise
productivity and
innovation
Collaborate more
efficiently
Empowered by
technology
Work flexibly and
cost-effectively
By the public sector, for the public sector
Its Work But Not As We Know it
 Many simultaneous changes in the world of work
 Not ‘yesterday modified’ but transformative
 Assumptions, practices and policies need to
change

NGW Principles
• Next Generation Working applies to all of our workforce
• Work takes place at the most effective locations and at the
most effective times to meet business needs
• Managing performance focuses on outcomes
rather than presence at a location
• Staff feel more empowered, trusted and have greater
ownership of their work
• Work process are simplified – and are “Digital First”
By the public sector, for the public sector
NGW Principles
• A more flexible mix of work options
• Flexibility will be the norm in how we deliver services
• Everyone is in principle considered suitable to work in a
flexible way
• Employees may have more choice about
where and when they work, always subject
to service requirements
• Space in offices is allocated to activities, not to individuals
and not on the basis of seniority

High Level Benefits
Cost saving
Reduced travel
Building
utilisation
•
NCC needs to save £2m in building costs (on top of Angel savings)
•
Laptops will save around 1 hour per day from generic use, more when we get
proper links into Care systems etc
•
6,850 linear meters of paper storage within NCC main buildings.
•
80% of paper held by staff is a duplicate
•
Flexible workers only occupy a desk around 48% of the time - this is 28% for
Field workers
•
Digital records are more secure and can be better shared

Mobile Working
To fully mobilise our workforce, we will introduce:

business efficiency
Coffee etc)
•Mobile devices (Smartphones, light
weight laptops, Windows 8 tablet
devices)

forms designed for tablets and on and off
line working capability)

keyboard, headset, cradle, stylus etc)
•Access to Sharepoint whilst mobile
•Microsoft LYNC (person to person video
•E-signature and remote printing /
mailing will negate the need for mobile and data conferencing, call forwarding,
messaging, presence)

Mobile Working - What can you do with Tablets now?
Tablets have intuitive touch screen capability that
allows quick gesture actions for opening and using on
board applications (Apps)
Tablets have Apps for Corporate E-Mail, Calendar,
Contacts, Maps and Note Taking that can be accessed
by a single touch/click – without logging into the full
Citrix desktop
By the public sector, for the public sector
Mobile Working - What can you do with Tablets now?
Tablets like Laptops are powerful and can run MS Office
locally on the machine creating reports and other
documents
Tablets can use a ‘Stylus’ to handwrite to typed text
enabling the user to write electronically and reduce the
need to use paper forms or notebooks
Tablets can use ‘Voice’ commands to control some of
the features and even allow the user to type what is
spoken, this works best with a Bluetooth Headset
By the public sector, for the public sector
Mobile Working - What are we delivering in the short
to mid-term future?
On / Offline Working on Mobile Devices
Middleware forms/apps upload back to
core back office systems with connectivity
without user involvement
CRM
Example Back Office systems
By the public sector, for the public sector
Mobile Working - What are we delivering in the short
to mid-term future?
MS LYNC
Audio and Visual Conferencing (Desktop, Laptop, Smartphone and Tablet)
My Presence (See if colleagues are available or busy, set by Outlook
Calendar or manually)
Instant Messaging – instant typed communication
Sharing your desktop – collaborative working opportunities
Make Telephone Calls – using Bluetooth or USB connected phone
peripherals
By the public sector, for the public sector
Mobile Working - What are we delivering in the
short to mid-term future?
• Secure E-mail
o Egress encrypted mail system is installed and will allow users to send
encrypted e-mail (body text and attachments) via mobile devices and
using Remote Access. Can potentially compliment or replace GCSX use.
• Fax to Desktop
o RightFax system will enable users to send / receive faxes via their Citrix
desktop connected devices. Frees up users from having to scan in a
hardcopy fax, removes expensive hardware and leased lines.
By the public sector, for the public sector
Mobile Working - What are we delivering in the
short to mid-term future?
• Canon MFD
o Replacement of old Ricoh printers with new enabling technology, more
secure and more flexible i.e. ‘follow me printing’ and improved scanning.
• Canon Mobile and Guest Printing
o Allows users of mobile devices to print to any Canon Multi-Functional
Device without the need to log in to Citrix Desktop.

NGW – Key Mindset
•I have permission to think differently about how my team works.
• I have seen some ideas about what else can be done
• I have some basic tools that I can use to make positive changes
• I know how to get support to do this, if I need it
• Whilst new technology and buildings offer more opportunities, I can already do
more with what I have
• Most of what I want to do is already enabled by HR policies and what isn’t can
be reviewed
• Specific changes need to fit local circumstances and I recognise that I need to
drive this activity
