 Christians
believed the Bible was inspired
by God so everything in it is true.
 Christians
believed God made the world
and all its life forms, including humans in
six days.
 They

rejected the Charles Darwin theory.
They felt that evolution would cause
dangerous social movements.
 Preacher
led religious revivals based on
the authority of the scriptures. Which
rose against science.
 Charles
Darwin was a naturalist and
geologist best known for his evolutionary
theory. From 1809-1882 he lived exploring
the science of life
 Darwin’s
theory stated that plants and
animals had developed over millions of
years, to create life instead of God.
 Darwin’s
5 theories are;
 Evolution
– Species come and go through
time, while they exist they change
 Common
decent – Organisms are
descended from one or several common
ancestors and have changed from the
original.
 Species
Multiply- Diversification of life
involves groups from one species changing
until they become two separate species; this
has probably occurred billions of times on
earth
 Gradualism-
Evolutionary change occurs
through very small changes within
populations; new species are not created
suddenly
 Natural
Selection- Evolutionary change
occurs through variation between
individuals; some variants give the
individual an extra chance of survival.

The Scopes Trial is
also known as
monkey trial
 In
March, 1925. TN
passed nations
first law for it to
be illegal to teach
about evolution.
John Thomas Scopes

scopes age 24
lived in Dayton, TX.
 John
Clarence Darrow
scopes lawyer
named was Clarence
Darrow.
 The
state attorney
was William
Jennings Bryan he
was a Christian and
believed evolution
theories led to
dangerous social
movements.
 Bryan was aware of
serious difficulties
with Darwinism and
lack of scientific
support

Bryan is one the left in the picture
 This
trial was considered the “test case” for
attacking the new law by including evolution
in his curriculum.
 Darrow
changed his clients plead to guilty
and scopes was convicted and charged with a
fine of $100
 1967
the supreme court struck down the TN
