What is Video Editing?

• Video Editing (AKA Non-Linear Editing or NLE) is the process of editing segments of motion video production footage, photos, special effects, and sound recordings in the post-production process to create a finished video or slide show. There are many programs available for Mac, Windows, and even Linux users, ranging from free to thousands of dollars. Most commercially available consumer level editors are in the $65 - $200 range.

How many video & audio tracks are supported?

How many, & what kind of transitions are included? (simple fades & wipes, or more complex) What kind of special effects? (green screen, shake removal, pan/zoom Ken Burns effect, picture-in picture, follow object, blur followed object, slow-motion, etc.) Ability to write DVD or Blu-ray discs directly, without requiring additional software Can it generate background music?

The Editing Process

• • • • • • • Collect resources (videos, photos, music, narration, sound effects, etc.). Don't include other people's copyrighted music, clip art, photos, video, etc. without written permission from copyright holder.

Decide how you want them arranged, then place into timeline or story board in desired sequence (can re-arrange later if needed) Trim elements if needed Add transitions as desired Add audio track(s) (music, sound effects, narration, etc.) Add titles, special effects, credits, etc.

Render & save to desired format(s)

My Credentials

• I'm an amateur photographer, but sometimes shoot video & have done fairly basic video editing since about 2008, primarily using various versions of Pinnacle Studio. Some are at

youtube.com/DMADave

. Other videos there are just straight from the camera with no editing, except perhaps for a title & credits. – – – – – – – – – – – – – My 1st DJI Phantom Flight (edited with Windows Live Movie Maker) Josh & Krissy's bi-plane flight (short teaser created with Pinnacle Studio's SmartMovie mode) 2014 Florida Road Trip A Day at the Zoo: Cincinnati Zoo Blooms "Professor" Terry Cavanaugh (Dec. 1940 - Mar. 2014) Tribute Young Green Heron Triplets Time-lapse: Cincinnati Reds after game fireworks 7/29/2011 Lake Lakengren Fireworks 2011 Time-Lapse Tractor Square Dancing at Maria Stein Country Fest 2011 Whitewater Kayaking on Little River, Townsend, TN Final launch of Space Shuttle Discovery: STS-133 Feb. 24, 2011 Hand-Feeding Hummingbirds @ Lake Hope State Park July 2009 Soaring - Oct. 2008
