WASAMED Conference,MAI-Bari, 14-17 February
The mission of GEWAMED
To build and disseminate an extensive
knowledge base for mainstreaming
gender dimensions into IWRM in the
Mediterranean Region.
How the GEWAMED project
works?

It is a Coordinated Action (CA)
 Financed by the INCO Programme of the EC
 Within the 6th Framework Research Programme
 Addressed to the Mediterranean Region


Coordinated Actions promote :
 New knowledge through networking,
 Exchange of information and sinthesize
knowledge
 Act as a forum for discussion
 Disseminate knowledge.
The GEWAMED project has started on 15 February
2006 with a duration of 4 years.
Why a project like GEWAMED ?

The GEWAMED is to some extend the
response to a SSA Project called INGEDI
(108 000 €) undertaken in 2004.
 The INGEDI project identified the following
major gender issues :
 lack of coordination mechanisms among relevant
institutions and related bodies
 lack of institutional support for information
dissemination.
 lack of coordination among women programmes.
 insufficient knowledge among men and women
about their own rights.
Why a project like GEWAMED ?

Scarce access to information and technology
(particularly in the sanitation area).
 limited political commitment in integrating
gender dimensions in water-related policies,
legislations and programmes.
 few initiatives undertaken to ensure women’s
participation in water-related decisionmaking.
 lack of skills and knowledge in promoting
gender mainstreaming in integrated water
resources management.
INGEDI Recommendations
Establishment of a Mediterranean network
to be interlinked with national ones.
2. develop information and communication
strategies.
3. develop a national agenda for
mainstreaming of gender issues in water
resources.
4. undertake national seminars and workshops
with women associations and government
agencies.
1.
INGEDI Recommendations
5.
6.
7.
provide information at all levels addressing issues
on water and sanitation, and risk assessment.
capacity building on gender analysis and
participatory tools in water resources management.
sensitise policy-makers on the importance of
integrating a gender perspective in integrated water
resources management.
The GEWAMED Project is a partial response to these
recommendations

The process of information
collection and dissemination

The process of information collection is
basically made of a mechanism of collecting
information at field level and at regional level
where information is collected analysed and
integrated.
 The process of dissemination is in essence
the reverse of that of information collection.
