What is PDT?

Develop America's Airmen Today ... for Tomorrow

• Professional Development Training (PDT): Group of summer training programs designed to: • Help cadets gain knowledge of the management challenges in leadership and human relations encountered by a junior Air Force officer • Provide a general orientation in Air Force specialties • Motivate cadets toward an Air Force career

PDT Eligibility

Develop America's Airmen Today ... for Tomorrow

• Cadet must: • Be a US citizen • Meet military/academic retentions at nomination • Be returning to school in the fall (for at least one term) • Not be attending Field Training in 2009 • Not be an AECP student • Not be a special student (as defined by AFROTCI-36 2011) • Not have participated in the same PDT in the past

Specific Eligibility Requirements

• Some programs have restrictive criteria that may limit who applies for a PDT (i.e., weight, fitness, major, GPA, etc) • Some programs solicit nominations with final selections made by the sponsoring agencies (i.e., ACE, NRO, IIP Language)

   Category I – open to GMC and POC students Category II – open to POC students only Category III – open to POC students on AFROTC scholarship

Professional Development Training 2009 – Category I

Develop America's Airmen Today ... for Tomorrow

• USAFA Freefall (AFAFF) • Objective: Build character, develop leadership skills and self-confidence • Training is physically and mentally demanding • Daily physical fitness training • Ground school • 5 Freefall jumps from 4500 feet • All jumps are graded • After 2 jumps cadets will be evaluated for program continuance

Professional Development Training 2009 – Category I

Develop America's Airmen Today ... for Tomorrow

• USAFA Freefall (AFAFF) • Cadets must: • Have a passing PFT score prior to nomination and again NLT 2-weeks prior to leaving school for summer • Weigh less than 215 pounds and be at least 18 years of age • Be able to hold a chin-up for ten seconds • Medical Requirements: • USAFA 1042 and medical questionnaire must be certified by a Flight Surgeon • Parachutist Badge awarded after 5 successful jumps

• Soaring (SOAR) • Objective: Provide cadets an initial exposure to flying and to AF flying operations • Cadets receive instruction through: • Ground school • Actual flight in non-powered gliders • Maximum allowable weight: 230 pounds

• International Immersion Program (IIP) • Objective: The Institute of International Education (IIE) awards grants to universities to establish language and cultural immersion programs. • Operation Air Force – OSI (OPS AF-OSI) • Objective: To shadow an OSI officer and make every attempt to accomplish your career field interview (necessary for entrance into OSI) • Designed for cadets interested in the Office of Special Investigation (OSI) career field • Secret clearance required • Training Dates: • 1-19 June 2009 • 22 June – 10 July 2009 • 13-31 Jul 2009

• Cadet Combatives Course (CCC) • Objective: Educate, train and produce an office of character with a warrior ethos and expeditionary mindset who is culturally aware, motivated professional dedicated to serve the nation and prepared to lead Airmen in the 21 st century • Complete 40-hr, Modern Army Combatives Course • Individualized training of hand-to-hand combat • Conduct squad-level, force-on-force scenarios • Physical Fitness Test score 85 or higher to apply

• Cadet Cultural Immersion Program (CCIP) • Objective: Enhance cross-cultural skills by exposing cadets to different cultures and language • Specific Program Requirements: Passport (and possible visa) required upon selection • Language requirement: None • Program Length: 2 – 3 weeks depending on location • Training Dates: TBD • Training Locations: Various overseas locations

• Advanced Course in Engineering (ACE) • A.K.A. “Cyber Boot Camp” • Objective: • Develop future officers for the next-generation of cyber officers through education, problem solving, military internship, and physical conditioning (to include weekly 8-mile runs).

• ACE graduates are filling key positions in the Air Force and DOD.

The Volunteer Process

• Mandatory attendees do not volunteer via WINGS • Type 1/Type 2- four year scholarship cadets do not volunteer for OPS AF, they will automatically be assigned • Nominations close out: 14 Nov 08 • Assignment release: NET 8 Dec 08

The Volunteer Process

Develop America's Airmen Today ... for Tomorrow

• PDT is voluntary, becomes mandatory when selected • Apply for PDT programs at the unit • According to HQ, region, and unit guidelines • Obtain a PDT Volunteer Statement from your detachment • Be aware of any scheduling conflicts that may arise • Volunteer for as many different programs as you want, provided: • You meet ALL the eligibility (general and specific), medical and physical requirements listed for a particular program • You will likely be selected for only one PDT assignment

Things to Consider Before Volunteering for PDT

• Think about which PDT programs you are interested in • Remember, some programs are physically demanding. Some require you to pass a special PFT before being nominated by the Det CC--start training now!

• Discuss PDT programs, when you will be available, and departure locations with your family and employers

Things to Consider When Volunteering for PDT

• Attendees Receive (unless otherwise indicated): • Training Pay (approx $31 per day) • Round-trip transportation, lodging, & meals • Training Dates • Some program dates are still being determined • HQ AFROTC/DOTT will attempt to match program dates with your preferences • May not be possible in all cases • Some programs are available only at certain times • When completing your PDT Volunteer Statement, enter the dates you are NOT available to attend PDT • Summer school session, family reunions, weddings, etc.

Things to Consider When Volunteering for PDT

• Decide on a departure location • Only authorized departure locations are: • Home of record • Location of AFROTC Detachment • Upon completing training you must return to the same location from which you departed • Consider how you will travel to PDT • Cadets selected for training may travel by government provided transportation or POV (not to exceed 350 miles one way or if PDT is more than 30 days) • Airline tickets are provided – cadets cannot purchase tickets

Things to Consider Upon Being Selected for PDT

•Do you have a current reserve ID card? • Required for all contracted cadets traveling overseas •Is a Secret clearance required? • Not unless specifically mentioned. •Is a Passport and/or Visa required? • Yes, if selected to attend language or cultural immersion programs overseas. If you volunteer, you should have your paperwork ready to submit. Due to processing time constraints, alternates are only chosen from those with passports in hand. Expenses involved may be reimbursed on your travel voucher. Save all receipts.

Things to Consider Upon Being Selected for PDT

• Get the necessary exams/paperwork scheduled and/or completed for any special medical and physical requirements • Read all requirements to insure compliance • USAFA 1042, Health Questionnaire, PFT and flexed arm hang are required to attend AFAFF • Immunizations, passports (overseas travel)

Things to Consider Upon Being Selected for PDT

• Orientation flights • May or may not be available • Dependent on mission requirements • Not guaranteed and should not be expected • Physiological Training may increase flying opportunities • Units can attempt to schedule cadets for training at bases with altitude chambers but travel will not be funded by AFROTC. Cadets must pay all expenses (travel, lodging, meals, etc) • A physiological training card does not guarantee increased flying opportunities, but may help depending on the base you visit
