MISSION
– Royal Decree 3.853/1970, establishes IHM´s MISSION
• Ensure safety of navigation
• Carry out hydrographic surveys and sea bottom relief studies
• Sistematic observation and study of the fisical phenomema that affect
navigation
• Nautical chart production
– Law 7/1986 , on cartography planning, regulates Spain’s cartographic
production
• The Ministry of Defence is responsible for nautical cartography
• The State, trough IHM, bears the competence of formation and maintainance
of the basic nautical cartography

MISSION
– Royal Decree 1545/2007, regulates the National Cartographic System
IHM is responsible for the:
• Planning, production programming, formation and maintenance of nautical
cartografphy
• Registration in the Cartography General Registry, of the coastline and maritime
boundaries
• Production of naval cartography
- Law 14/2010, Spatial Data Infraestructures and GIS in Spain –
complements Law 7/1986
• Promotes data publication by means of web services and geographic services
• It does not assign any direct duties to IHM, but mentions some assummed obligations,
following the SDI, which include:
o Depiction of the maritime coastal areas….
o Coastal waters …
o Naval military cartography for National Defense…
